Week 46 - USA F37 ($10,000) - Pensacola, FL (clay)

A 127-man draw - only the q1 gets a bye!

QR1:  Shane Monroe (USA) UNR vs Andrew Watson WR 1764 (CH = 1247 in July last year)

QR1:  Angus Bradshaw UNR vs Graham Ball (CAN) UNR

QR1:  Niclas Braun (GER) UNR (CH = 1303 in September last year) vs (q13) Ryan Peniston WR 1647 (CH = 1600 in May)

QR1:  (q4) Nuno Borges (POR) WR 1236 (CH = 1072 in August) vs John Horoz Garner (???) UNR

I see the draw also includes one Franklin Tiafoe.  At least there's no danger of his being mistaken for a girl, unlike his twin brother! wink

Only one survivor, but probably not for much longer:

QR1:  Andrew Watson WR 1764 defeated Shane Monroe (USA) UNR by 3 & 2

QR1:  Graham Ball (CAN) UNR defeated Angus Bradshaw UNR by 6-2 2-6 6-0

QR1:  Niclas Braun (GER) UNR defeated (q13) Ryan Peniston WR 1647 by 0 & 1  bleh

QR1:  (q4) Nuno Borges (POR) WR 1236 defeated John Horoz Garner UNR by 1 & 0

*****

QR2:  (q1) Guanarteme ( ) Nuez (ESP) WR 1088 (= CH) vs Andrew Watson WR 1764

Not only does the Spaniard have an unusual (to put it mildly!) first (can't call it Christian) name, but his surname means "walnut" in Spanish!

Andrew Watson makes it through four rounds of qualifying!

FQR:  Andrew Watson WR 1764 defeated Sergey Belov UNR by 6-3 6-7(6) 6-4

And his reward is a reasonable-looking first round draw:

L32:  Andrew Watson WR 1764 vs (WC) Warren Kuhn (RSA) UNR

I think he may live to regret that win:

L16:  (6) Félix Auger-Aliassime (CAN) WR 602 (CH = 595 in July) vs Andrew Watson WR 1764

The Canadian tyro is still only 16 years old!

Does look a task !! Though I am sure Andrew is very pleased to have picked up a second ranking point.

It will be an experience.

Well done Andrew on his week, but the rather younger young man looks to have been just a bit too good.

L16: (6) Felix Auger Aliassime (CAN) WR 602 (CH 595 in July), aged 16, JCH 2 in June beat Andrew Watson WR 1765 6-3 6-1

To be leaving junior tennis behind at 16 is the hallmark of a special player particularly on the men's side. Hopefully he will come and try a bit of Spanish clay in the new year!
