Interesting discussion re the ATP finals over recent years.
While I did enjoy my one visit ( finals day when Davydenko and the Bryans won ), I certainly agree that in many ways the finals have been a let down in recent years with some jaded players and a lot of decisive straight set wins. Actually this year has been better than recent years for extended matches with indeed that Andy vs Kei record breaker.
The thing is what is the best way(s) to improve this while still being 'real' ? I assume that at least the big majority do not want manufactured interest / excitement. If a player can win decisively in straight sets, too right that they go on and go for it.
I agree with some that in theory round robin sounds quite good for this event, but it doesn't really seem to work as against knock out. The players can still be well rewarded and the spectators see win or out knock out matches involving the world's best
If you have knock out, best of 5 then becomes realistic with gap days. It simply isn't for me in a group set up - quite apart from a schedule issue one sided best of five can be even worse than one sided best of three.
So straight knock out and best of five at least in the final I think should be seriously considered.
Can anyone answer a quick question about the ranking situation?
If Murray loses his semi he will get 600pts total from the tournament. If Djokovic loses in the final he will get 1000pts total from the tournament.
Am I right in thinking that if the results above happen then Murray will still be #1 on Monday 21st, but Djokovic will take over #1 on Monday 28th due to Murray's 275 Davis Cup points being dropped?

Haven't checked the exact dates, but the numbers are otherwise correct. For Murray to finish the year at Nş1, he needs to at least match Novak now. So either they both get knocked out in the semi, or Murray wins his semi and Djokovic loses his, or Murray wins the tournament. Any other combination and Djokovic will return to Nş1.
