Week 44 - Great Britain F5 ($10,000) - Sheffield (indoor hard)

The drawsheet is out with another wonderfully British draw.

Only four foreigners (and two are drawn against each other in QR1)

Mason Recci is top seed so the ones above him must be in the MD

Matt Frost, Ollie Hudson and Max Stewart are three of the notable wildcard entries.

Well done to Damian and Bruce, in particular, for culling some of the 'pesky' threat.

Some interesting wins for the GB qualifiers - good to see so many having a go, and so many new people doing so well. But a terrible draw for anyone who got Soren Hess-Olesen (who is actually, if I remember correctly, Søren Hess-Olesen). He's Lloyd Glasspool's old partner, with whom the latter won the university doubles championship. As I recall it, he was a top singles player, too. Not sure why he's playing unranked now.

shame Stewart and McHugh drew each other. Would have been nice to see both qualify for the main draw as two of our best juniors

Luke Oakley beat him comfortably in August.

Interesting. I haven't really followed him. Checked his ITF record, and he seems to have played three futures after finishing at university, reaching the finals in one, losing to someone now ranked in the 300s in another, and retiring from the third in the QFs. Then nothing until late summer of this year. I'll stick by my assessment: sounds like an injury and return - Luke Oakley got him on his first tournament back - and while he may not yet be where he was, I still don't think he's a good draw.

An elbow-injury which has kept Søren away from the tour for a very long time. Quite a pity as he was playing tremendous during especially the last year with Texas Longhorns where he as the first Danish player ever reached the number 1 position of the national college ranking list. Now he seems to be fit again and he is starting slowly with future qualifiers. Last week he lost to a strong US-junior in the Q-finals of an Norwegian future. Only God knows why he didn't use the rules about protected ranking to avoid the qualifiers. In Sheffield he joins his Davis Cup Colleague Frederik Nielsen who is already in the main draw. Could be a great couple for the doubles but I guess Søren needs to focus on the singles.

Welcome to the board DanisD and thanks for the info.  I too was surprised to see him unranked in futures qualifying given his college record and, like Spectator, felt Soren could be a real banana skin for any Brits who run into him.

I think you have to be quite high ranked to qualify for a PR 250-300 or something.

.... and by the way - a funny detail: Lloyd Glasspool and Søren Hess-Olesen have both been named as new players for the Danish 1st division team Skovbakken for the up coming season. You can find the list of players here (in Danish): http://www.tennisavisen.dk/gruppe-2-og-3-i-herrernes-dh/

Maybe they are planning to travel and play doubles together when Søren gets his ranking back.
