Week 44 - Challenger ($50,000) - Charlottesville VA, USA (Hard)

I see Reilly Opelka (tiny to his mates) has put out Mackenzie Mac. Although Mr McDonald had been busy it just shows the gulf between the top college players and the very top juniors destined to breeze through the challenger level as a teenager with a mere tug of the forelock. Good luck to Tiny in the final, I do like to see teenagers win at this level regardless of their nationality unless it's against a Brit.

So when McDonald defeated Tiafoe a couple of weeks ago, did that show the superiority of top college players over top juniors?

Or when Tiafoe defeated McDonald the week after did that show the superiority of top juniors over top college players?

I don't think too much can ever be gleaned from one result....

And when McDonald beat Tiafoe earlier this week top college players were thee ones again ?

Very rarely a good idea to fix on individual results to try to make out a much bigger case, especially to talk about some "gulf". Players are just overall not consistent enough that one can make judgements, especially such a strong judgement, from one or two matches.

Kind of reminder of Edmund beating Evo outdoors in Texas in February ( even if pretty decisively ) so therefore supposedly no debate that Edmund was the guy for the Davis Cup indoors in Glasgow in September when there was so much else to consider. Overall his final selection seemed fair enough, but never just on that one match.

College tennis being very much my non specialist subject I can't really comment much further and Oakland may or may not have a decent case, but it does not come from these matches. I am guessing that it is open to debate with many factors to consider and almost certainly one size not fitting all.

Doubles Final :

(1) Brian Baker & Sam Groth (USA/AUS) CR 134 (77+57) beat Brydan Klein & Ruan Roelofse (RSA) CR 400 (187+213) 6-3 6-3

Toughee. That's Baker's 4th doubles title in 4 Challengers since the start of October, the second with Groth who clearly brings some powerful assets to the court.

Brydan's ranking will remain much as it is. Was defending 48 points, scored 48 points.
