GSM Cilic beats Djokovic 6-4, 7-6. Murray has to reach final to be world no. 1

Have to say that when I looked at the draw, I thought Cilic was the best chance of seeing Djokovic out before the final. Given that he has a lot to play for, I always thought he would be more likely than Stan, for example, who has already comfortably qualified for the O2 and has little to play for other than pride.

I hope Cilic can prove me right as Andy would then only have to reach the final here to top the charts, so to speak.

Holy ****. It's now a very real possibility.

Of course it still requires Murray to go further than he ever has in Paris. So there's that.

At the very least it's 820 less potential points for Djokovic in the race to Miami.

*It would still require Murray to equal his PB in Paris

(seriously I have no recollection of that at all. Weird)

However Novak could still take the no.1 back at the O2. The points are that close....(assuming Andy gets to no.1 this week)

The rankings are a joke and really serious questions must be raised.

How can a guy win 2 slams, reach the final of the other not be ranked year end number 1? I know not mathematically, I'm just talking morally.

Truth is, since Novak had issues at Wimbledon, Andy has been vulturing, David Ferrer style. The rankings should be based on 15 countable tourns, 18 is too much.

Also, talking of extreme vulturing, has anyone looked at Dom Theim's stats! Look at his non countable tourns, he has played about 52 atp tourns this year.

Cannot stand vultures, who mop up at 250 and 500s and then claim to be legit top 10.

over and out.

The No 1 position is over a rolling year and joko has had a poor last 6 months with issues as you say I disagree about Andy he played Vienna which was a 500 but then joko could have played Basle or Vienna but chse not to I have no doubt if andy gets to No 1 even for 1 week he DESERVES it

Nah, not sure Andy would have played Vienna if had been 5000 points behind, he saw the opportunity to vulture so did, he should do the moral thing and retire in the semi and let Novak be year end no 1. He should try get to no 1 the real way and win AO in 2017.

Oh behave !

In Grand Slams Andy has also been in 3 finals, albeit winning one against Novak's two. Hardly some ridiculous discrepancy, but hey perhaps we should just base #1 on Slams and forget the rest. "Novak had issues at Wimbledon" - bless.

Andy has won 7 titles this year : Wimbledon, the non ranking points Olympics, 2 ATP Masters and 3 ATP 500s ( the only 3 he competed in ), not been near an ATP 250 and is two counters short of his rankings counters allowance so needs to work on that "vulturing" ( Novak may be even more short that's his issue ). Also won Davis Cup matches, which also earn no ranking points this year. Basically played no more than the supposed mandated schedule for a top player, indeed missed out the Canadian Masters to concentrate on that Olympics thingee, which he won ( and did I mention earned him no ranking points )

He has currently won 54 of his last 58 matches.

Over and out
