And you certainly hear tales of it happening when players go to far-flung places. At top events too. Not just ITFs (where it often happens that players borrow raquets- either coz the rackets haven't turned up or they didn't bring enough and the stringer is broken/busy/ and they need to borrow one mid-match, say)
And, yes, this is Paris, after all. There are shops. And amazing on-site facilities. Borrow a few. Ask the rep. Buy a couple (donate them to the next charity auction thingy you're asked to give something to, if you don't like them).
His capacity to improvise may have been affected by the fact that his is the first match on this morning, at 10 AM. If he got there yesterday evening and only realised that he definitely wasn't going to get his bags last night, it might have been a bit difficult to organise replacements.
I'm still convinced he could have sorted out a solution. Not sure who is coach is currently, but he must have someone with him, that's a job they could have done. If I'd spent my career to date playing at challenger level and below, I'd do everything I can to play a masters event, even qualies. it feels like something doesn't add up to me or a hissy fit was had!
But I also agree with Jon - his coach is there to handle that sort of thing. Of course, it's possible Mark Hilton (current coach, no?) didn't go with him this time.
But, as said, it's surprisingly common (for people either not to have them or to run out). At a big club, in a big city, I really don't think there could have been any major problem to get hold of some replacement raquets.
He's down to play Knoxville where he is defending champion and Champaign the next two weeks. Be interesting to see if he makes the trip he's top entry in both. Only really winning both would be a rankings boost.
So the latest hoo-hah is that Benoit Paire (persona non grata as far as the Federation are concerned, after the debacle at the Olympics) asked is he could play on the Gym Poliveau court - and Guy Forget (tournament umpire) stuck him on court 1 !
Which is mildly amusing really, as players shouldn't be allowed to pick courts and what did he expect ? Them to say, 'sure Benoit, we love you, despite everything, whatever you want'... ?
And Del Potro not getting a wildcard seems to be taking up a lot of print too - again, seemingly Forget refused. The vast majority of French twitter people think he should have got one and Guy was being a ****
Sorry, but clearly Del Potro should have got a WC for Paris.
If only to help get him into the 32 seeds for the Aussie Open. It is looking like he will be a heck of a dangerous floater !
Nightmare scenario : Andy still behind Novak for WR 1 gets JMDP in Aussie Open R1.
Edit : though it does seem that he wasn't even entered for qualifying.

Reading on MTF, Del Potro apparently announced during Basle that he wasnt playing Paris / taking a WC as he wanted to make sure he was rested for DC Final. Which would explain why he hadnt entered qualies.

What is the latest with Gael Monfils, I see he hasnt entered Paris, is that just precautionary, I hope he is ok for London...
ATP have run an article today on the final run down to get the last places for London. In the doubles write up they say Marach and Martin need to win the title to qualify, after their good run at Vienna. Only problem with that is that Marach didnt get a place as Martin and Marach together are too lowly ranked, and Martin is playing with Simon. So they cant qualify as they arent playing.
Which is my real point - given that position, surely Paris should have offered a WC to Marach and Martin as a pairing to give them a shot? Why would the ATP deny them that chance? Surely wrong decision???

Hear, hear. That's a disgrace. We've had this discussion before, JonH about the entry systems for doubles Masters at critical points. And it is, given what's at stake for the pairings, quite simply wrong.

At least the ATP have updated their articles and taken out mention of Martin and Marach making London. They do of course say that 5 pairs can claim the final two places, those ranked 7,8,9, 10 and 12...Marach and Martin are of course 11.
At least Martin gets to play with Simon (being French helps), but Marach is left hanging. Shame on them for not being ranked a place or two higher
