Week 43 - ITF ($50K+H) - Tampico, Mexico Hard

Good stuff all round and I take it that Katie slept well last night after more than 4 hours on court.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if at this time Katie got that close to Mertens, but interesting to see how it goes.

Freya clearly has a much better opportunity to progress. With the points she still has to drop before December's Aussie Open qualifying entry date she does though still have a lot of work to do to make Melbourne. Big ask as they say, but she seems to be playing well.

That R2 win takes her to 161 ranking points, which looks about WR 285, already going to be a very healthy CH. She does though have a net 41 points to drop, notably including 31 points from being a runner up as a qualifier in last year's Shrewsbury 25K.

So she has so far a guaranteed 120 (161-41) points for Aussie Open qualifying. Now, for example, the current WR 250 has 190 points, so certainly lots of points still need to be gathered with hopefully more to be gathered this week on top of 18 so far ( included in the 120 guaranteed points ).

Nice catch, Indiana. So it does luck unlikely then, but not out of the question - hopefully she can pull off a couple of big victories and get close.

Smaller q draw for women at GS so the cut off is generally a lot lower than 250. I think 215-220 is more realistic and is beyond Freya this year.

Thanks, paulisi. That sort of ranking would make a target of about 240 points, ie doubling what she has banked so far this year.

Mathematically possible, in actuality extremely unlikely. Now, go win a couple of titles, and you will have certainly earned it, Freya !

Ah, I see the girls' QFs have taken place.

QF: (JE) Katie Swan WR 468 lost to (1) Elise Mertens (BEL) WR 132 (CH 122 19/09/16) 6-2 6-2

QF: Freya Christie WR 304 lost to Victoria Rodriguez (MEX) WR 435 (CH 216 16/11/15) 6-3 0-0 retired

Pity and I just do hope nothing particularly serious for Freya.

I do hope Freya is OK, great shame as a really deep run here and she could have made a decent dent in the Aussie Open points requirement.

Katie's loss is interesting when put in context. Elise is about to turn 21 and had a JCH of 7 back in 2012, so focused on juniors up until she was 18, culminating in a U.S. junior open loss to Katie B.

In contrast Katie S for good reason has transitioned earlier and with a present rank of 468 sits in a better position than Elise a comparative year later at 577(2013) who then moved to 264 (2014), 157 (2015) and perhaps by the end of this year on the cusp of the top 100.

Onward and upward for both I feel.

Super stuff in the doubles

SF: Usue Maitane Arconada & Katie Swan (USA/GBR) UNR (1030+UNR) beat (3) Catalina Pella & Nadia Podoroska (ARG/ARG) CR 581 (223+358) 4-6 6-4 [11-9]

F: Usue Maitane Arconada & Katie Swan (USA/GBR) UNR (1030+UNR ) vs (1) Mihaela Buzarnescu & Elise Mertens (ROU/BEL) CR 344 (264+80)

Just the 2 hours 55 minutes of competition yesterday for Katie after 4 hours 16 minutes on Thursday. So be nice and fresh and Elise will have earlier played her singles SF.

60 points so far will take Katie from unranked to well inside the top 600

Great news on the doubles. Also hope that Ms Christie recovers quickly from whatever caused the retirement.

Freya's retirement evidently occurring on completion of the first set does at least suggest that it was probably nothing of a sudden serious nature.

All in all a good week for our ladies, most have increased their ranking significantly. Well done to them I look forward to next week.

Ms Swan is up 35 places

Great effort by the young pair still to reach a 50K+H final.

I love the tennis scoring system in general, but it can in games terms look very stark. I feared it would look even more stark when they were broken to love in the first game of the second set. But over the next 5 games they won more points than their opponents but less games. At 2-3* they had 2 break points for *3-3, didn't get them so *2-4 and no further chances. They did lose the 3 deuce / game points ( one scoring element I don't love ) with the 2 in the middle of the second set distinctly unhelpful.

No doubt well beaten though and maybe was for that short period a mixture of finding their feet and their opponents easing off a bit. Live scores wouldn't tell me!

Coupled with her singles QF and CH nice week indeed for Katie.
