Top 40 looks likely now. According to Live Rankings, only Stephane Robert can stop that he he would have to win the title in Moscow.
Indeed
I have spent a fair part of this evening checking out live rankings info re relevant players ( I'm so not trusting ).
So yes, now live WR 40 and can only be overtaken by Stephane Robert if and only if he wins the Moscow title and Kyle goes no further in Antwerp.
Robert, before the week is out, is I am sure meriting a further ( I assume he has previous ) entry in the Remarkable non-GB Performances thread. It is now apparently certain that he will at least enter the top 50 for the first time, now aged 36.
If Kyle wins his SF vs Gasquet, but loses the final, he will be WR 36 on Monday.
If he wins the final I 'think' he will be at least WR 34 ( given I think he'd go ahead of Sousa on tiebreak ) and would go a further place higher if his old sparring partner Carreno Busta loses his Moscow SF ( against none other than Stephane Robert ).
34 is quite close to 32 isn't it? How many seeds are there in a Slam? Sorry, one step at a time
Yes, I can definitely feel a French Open seeding position coming on.
Of course there's Oz but top 32 in time for that might be a bit of a tall order. But then again 2 months ago I'd have said top 40 in October was a tall order too so what do I know!
It is strange how one or two casual observations become Chinese whispers and distort into fact. Not that one should try and thwart opinion, merely take a consider view of the facts. Kevin Mitchel's report in the Guardian of the Gasquet v Edmund encounter at the U.S. open is consistent with what I saw which is an older elite player coming to the end of the peak of his career being demolished by a talented youngster on the rise who comprehensively out hit him in scorching conditions and has continued to do so to others. Gasquet himself makes no excuses, indeed the reverse. To quote our Kev
"
Gasquet was breathing hard from the middle stages of the match but he said there was no residual pain from the back injury that cut him down at Wimbledon. The Frenchman said of his opponent: Ive seen him many times play so I knew how good he is. He deserved it. He played well, will be very good in the future. So Im not surprised at all. "
There is a tendency on here to not celebrate success fully for fear of tempting fate or perhaps just because we are British and to quote that well known undertaker private Frazer 'we are all doomed" or "Rubbish" . Me I have a much more conventional home guard/ mainwaring view and would urge Kyle to just bring it on again, because they just don't like it upum.

Firstly, huge congratulations to Kyle Edmund - nae bad, indeed, as Indie said earlier. Lovely to see someone whom everyone reports as being so grounded and pleasant turning into one of the very top players of his age group and potentially top 40 on the Tour as a whole. Hurrah for him!
And yes, Indie, I've been following Robert's progress and would guess that either CD or I (responsible for Robert posts in the past on that thread) might just have been thinking of another one ...
From being so authorative and in control just began to disentangle a bit before a really loose final game of the set.
At his best Kyle just looks too good for Gasquet today ( a Gasquet today consistently properly hitting through the ball ). But he needs to find that level again. Gasquet hung in pretty well and pounced.

Keep trying to tell myself that if I am disappointed that Kyle hasn't beaten Gasquet, it just goes to show how far he has come. Still completely gutted though.
