As for Kyle's Live Ranking, once again Live-Tennis.eu appear to have it wrong.

Kyle officially has 943 points this morning. From Shanghai, he has already won 70 points (qualies 25 + L32 45) and will only lose his lowest scorer of 12. So by my calculations, Kyle has hit another milestone with this win as his points tally on Monday will be 1001 at least. That currently places him around 41 in the live rankings although there are plenty of players around him still playing.

Perhaps the most notable person he will definitely overtake in the rankings this week is Borna Coric. I wonder if Ryan Jones will have a little smile on his face when he sees that one.

L32:  Steve Johnson (USA) WR 24 (CH = 21 in July) vs (2) Andy Murray WR 2

Just checked the head-to-head.  They've met just twice before, in the Rio quarter-finals, when Andy won by 6-0 4-6 7-6(2), & at the same stage in last year's Shanghai Masters, when Andy won by 2 & 4.

Good solid win, well done kyle. His live race ranking hits 40 now. V impressive - if he has a strong last few weeks indoors, is it possible Kyle could reach a seeding position for Australian Open? No doubt that will jinx any possibility but worth asking the question of those who follow these things more closely?!

I think that will be tough. In terms of places, he is quite close with only another 10 place rise approx (if you use his live ranking today) getting him into a seeding position. But the points gaps are quite large. After this morning's win, Kyle will be on 1001 points. Gilles Simon is currently ranked 32 with 1315 points. Kyle also has a 90 points to drop out before the end of the year. So basically Kyle will need to find another 400 points or so, over the next few weeks which will be tough. He would probably have to do something spectacular such as win a 250 somewhere to have any chance. That is not out of the question, but towards the end of a long and tough season, it will be interesting to see how much more he is going to play this year.

On the other hand of course, if 3 or 4 of the Top 32 miss the AO through injury and say for example, that 32 seed is WR 36, the equation becomes very different.

One thing I do know, is that the way Kyle is playing now, a seeding in slams is not far away and he may well get there by the FO, which would help him defend the points he won this year by avoiding the risk of drawing a Djokovic or an Andy in the 1st two rounds. This is probably a more realistic target for him.

In some ways Kyle's performances this week are better than last week, to come through qualifying and now a MD match after such a short turnaround and such a high from last week, deeply impresses me, the lad is doing himself proud.

But wouldn't he also have the option to earn points in the first couple of weeks of the new season?  I know these points are irrelevant for entry into the AO but surely they are taken into account for seeding.

It will just be the first week of the new season that will count for seeding. The Aussie Open seedings will be based on the rankings from Monday 9th January.

Also, I've just noticed that Kyle drops 57 points from his ATP 250 Doha QF on 09/01, further limiting his chances.

So it is 09/01 that counts, with Kyle to drop 90 from Buenos Aires and 57 from Doha ( though will have low non counters to slightly offset these )

Anyway, still great progress, whatever

Old live-tennis.eu now has Kyle's ranking points as 985 and race points as 1001, which is precisely the wrong way round.

As said his ranking points should be 1001 and with one mandatory left after this week the race will count best 17, ie 1001 - 16 ( his 18th counter ). All his ranking points are from this race 'season'.

Hey hum ...

Remind me of a reliable live rankings site. One or two have been referred to before.

I do like the way live-tennis.eu is set out, with current live points, one more win live points and maximum live points for the week. I recall some others, excel based, had in a way for me too much info re the pluses and minuses.

Just a pity its actual figures are so often pish !

Kyle Live Ranking Update

On the asumption that we are correct and Kyle has 1001 points (pretty sure on that one) and that the other points tallies for players around Kyle are correct on Live Rankings (less sure on that one) Kyle is now at 43 in the rankings for next Monday.

There are only three players that could surpass him now.

Taylor Fritz - would have to reach the SF in Shanghai
Mischa Zverev - would have to reach the final
Vasek Posposil - would have to reach the final.

The last two are a bit far fetched. Fritz would likely have to beat Bautista Agut, Nadal and then either Zverev (the younger) or Tsonga.

Of course a victory for Kyle over Stan would change all that.
