17yo Mendez is ranked 47 in juniors (CH 25 last year) and the winner of this match is likely to get top seed Liu (WR 159) in R2, though Liu lost to a player who has never been in the top 350 from a set up in R1 last week, so there are definitely worse seeds to be close to in the draw.

The hard hitting Aussie Abbie Myers put out the Chinese seed, so clearly talk of her being vulnerable was spot on. Abbie can hit some amazing winners but also generally lacks consistency within matches (from the times I've seen her play), so Katy will get some free points from unforced errors.

Some massive swings in fortune in that final set - Katy went 4-0 up only to lose the next 5 games then won 12 of the last 14 points!

2 breaks each in the first 6 games of the 1st set then Katy broke Rodionova twice more from 3-3* to take the 1st set 6-3

Katy then broke for a 5th time to go *2-0 up in the 2nd but Rodionova immediately broke back. 6-3 2-1*
