Week 40 - ITF ($25K) - Redding CA, USA - Hard

Laura, Freya and Harriet should be in the main draw here.

FQR: (q2) Katie Boulter WR 402 v (q12) Michaela Gordon (USA) WR 759 (CH 600 in Apr; 17yo, junior WR 67 / CH 21 in 2015) or Abigail Mulbarger (USA) UNR

Lisa and Katie S were also on the qualifying list but there's no sign of them in the draw They were both below Katie B, so can't have got into the main draw directly. Hence, they've either decided not to play or/and one of the main draw wild cards has been freed up and given to one of them.

The girls are definitely getting to see some pretty rural bits of the U.S. Redding is 3 and 1/2 hrs North of San Francisco in a pretty empty part of the U.S. Plenty of opportunity for tree hugging.

After Katie S's collapse last week I would be surprised to see her here - maybe just resting up for a bit as she has had in injury - also may be the same for Lisa who is also in recovery mode. Hopefully both fit and well soon smile

That R1 draw looks very nice but it hides the dangers lurking nearby.

The winner of Harriet's R1 match will probably face 2nd seed Abanda in R2.

The winner of Laura's R1 match will probably play last week's 2nd seed Vrljic.

As if that wasn't bad enough, the winner of Freya's R1 match will get the winner of a R1 match between two SEs, which happens to be a repeat of last week's Stillwater 25K final!

The facts that a) Vrljic was seeded 2 in last week's 25K but is unseeded this week and b) both of last week's finalists are wouldn't even have made the cut here tell you all you need to know about the effects of last week's Las Vegas 50K and Stillwater 25K events nearly all converging on California, not to mention the fact that all the under-ranked college players and juniors here make a complete mockery of the seedings!

Surely it can't be completely beyond the powers that be to come up with a seeding system that takes junior and college results into account in some kind of sensible way. The current system isn't fair to the top junior and college players OR the seeds who happen to get drawn against one of them in R1 or R2.

Man from Universal Tennis Rating waves his hand wildly

Incidentally, UTR announced recently :

"Great Britain's Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has become the first Grand Slam nation to announce collaborative working relationship with Universal Tennis Rating (UTR). Each week the LTA now sends UTR results from a wide range of its junior and adult tournaments, giving thousands of UK tennis players worldwide UTR ratings."

Good win for Katie.

Indeed a UTR 'upset' : 11.60 beats 12.10

Oh dear, how tabaloid what a naive interpretation, I mean it's true but not relevant as it is statistically flawed comparing two different sets of data where you don't understand the relationship between the two. That is generally what is so interesting about this level of tennis ww are watching ie. the growth and transition of junior players.

Michaela's UTR data is "contaminated" by junior tennis, the result merely confirms that the WTA number 402 beat the world number 759 in straight sets. Now the equation defining the relationship between the two sets of data when the UTR is contaminated would be very interesting and they could then sell adjustments to betting companies to mitigate the odds they offer. Most likely the betting companies have their own algorithms that maintain their profit margins. So in short the odds offered will reflect that uncertainty.

Sorry I didn't mean to be rude with the tabloid jibe. But it is pretty simple stuff that is being peddled and is it worth paying for? I see extrapolation of data being used to blind and confuse on a regular basis at great cost.

An excellent but extreme example is that peddled by Andrew Wakefield about MMR, I heard him speak in the early 90's and it was painful to hear and even more painful to see those with an appetite for hearing his message devour it and the consequences for heard immunity and re-emergence of mesales amongst the chattering classes.

apologises I realise it's breakfast time
