FQR: (q1) Kyle Edmund WR 54 v Evgeny Donskoy (RUS) WR 95 (CH 65 in 2013)

Donskoy is best known to Brits as the player who lost that 5th rubber to Evo in straight sets in Coventry in 2013.

On the face of it, that looks like a very convincing win from Kyle. The stats tell a slightly different story perhaps. The BP conversion stats were: Kyle 3/3 Andujar 0/12. That is pretty good defensive work from Kyle to survive all those BPs. It would suggest that the match was much closer than the scoreline suggested.

Quite a lot of those break points were early doors.

The very first game went to 18 points before Kyle held, he broke and his second service game went to 12 points. Andujar then held for Kyle to be *3-1 and then sleep won ...

Good news. Well done Kedders

Qualifyig spots are

Kuznetsov
Garcia Lopez
Bautista Agut
Ramos Vinolas

An R1 win might see Kyle break into the Top 50 although it may depend on results elsewhere as well.

Three of the four qualifier spots are in Andy's quarter of the draw and the other would face Nadal in R2 if they got through, so I think this is probably the best of the options for Kyle.  Not saying it will be easy, but for any qualifier to draw someone in the MD who is ranked lower than them, has got to be considered a decent daw.

Fantastic to see him in the first round of an ATP 500, the hall mark of a top player on the ATP tour, with only 32 slots to play for its significantly tougher than Getting into slams. Next target 1300 points up from about 840 which will allow him the luxury of a seeding at slams

Yes, looks like Kyle has got the best of the qualifier spots:

R1: Garcia-Lopez, and if won ...
R2: (7) Bautista Agut or (Q) Millman, and if won again ...
QF: hopefully Andy, which would at least be interesting
