I thought the name sounded familiar. Santillan played in Cartagena this year where he beat Billy Harris. Didn't stop Billy taking a set off him first though. Sadly, I wasn't at that particular match, so I can't really provide any more inside info.

Certainly I expect Dan to win this one.

Trust me to open my big mouth.

Sorry Dan.

Colin perseveres with Scott Lipsky:

QR1:  (q1) Colin Fleming & Scott Lipsky (USA) CR 109 (64+45) vs Taylor Fritz & Ryan Harrison (USA/USA) CR 475 (237+238)

They can't have missed out on the main draw by much!  They will face the second seeds, Klaasen & Ram, if they qualify.  hmm

Given Eric Butorac has just retired, I guess if they click this could become a settled partnership.

Interesting.  Didn't know that.  The things you learn on this message board! wink  It would be nice to think that they could make a go of it.  Colin deserves a bit luck.

It'll be interesting to see how that wily old campaigner, Ugly Mug, copes with Santillan.  Fascinating surname, which suggested some Hispanic ancestry to me (I instinctively pronounce it the Spanish way, with the stress on the final syllable, in my head - something along the lines of Santeel-YAN), so I decided to dig a little deeper.  He's 19, was born in Tokyo, lives in Brisbane & is coached by Richi Sanchez & Dean Santillan.  Wicki describes him as an Australian-Japanese tennis player with a Japanese mother (no surprise) & a South African father, which is a bit of a surprise (I was expecting South American, until I saw the name of one of his coaches, Australian, when I saw that he lived in Brisbane, or US).  Apparently, the family moved to Brisbane, where he took Australian citizenship, but in March last year, he opted to play under the Japanese flag on account of a "fractious relationship" with Tennis Australia (another one! disbelief  Makes it look like the Down-Under version of our beloved LTA! wink ).

So far, so good, though not without a bit of a wobble:

QR1:  (q1) Colin Fleming & Scott Lipsky (USA) CR 109 (64+45) defeated Taylor Fritz & Ryan Harrison (USA/USA) CR 475 (237+238) by 6-3 6-7(4) [10-4]

FQR:  (q1) Colin Fleming & Scott Lipsky (USA) CR 109 (64+45) vs (q2) Nicholas Monroe & Artem Sitak (USA/NZL) CR 119 (58+61)

That is going to be a close encounter!

In light of this and the fact that Santillan has pushed Stepanek to 6-4 in the third today perhaps yesterday was not too much of a disastrous result.

Darn

Evidently they will pick up 25 points as doubles FQR losers, but not greatly here nor there or even a counter for Colin just now.

I am pretty sure he had a foot issue after his Wawrinka match at the US Open. So perhaps some ongoing issue, hopefully not bad enough to endanger him playing next week.

Dan doesn't seem to have gotten over the Wawrinka loss yet.
