What's the latest estimate of the number of points they would need?

Current WR 250 is on 207 points, WR 260 on 200 points and WR 270 on 191 points.

I'm not sure really as to what the likely ball park is for the WR going to be required.

One person we would no doubt prefer not to see in Aussie Open qualifying is Aljaz. But he has dropped to WR 101 in the latest rankings. He has no furher points to drop before the main draw entry list based on the 05/12/16 rankings. So on the face of it should be OK, but the next 5 in the current rankings, i.e. down to WR 106, are currently within 17 points of him and of course there may be protected rankings.

Anyway, on the brighter side, a good start to the week for Ed and Liam.

I share the same concern regarding Aljaz although at this point I would just be happy knowing he is going to be there.  It certainly looked like he was struggling with injuries in his last few tournaments and the fact that he has not played since week 39 suggests he shut it down for the year to get healthy for 2017.  Without any comment from the man himself we can only hope that he will be fully back up to speed by January as he has 90 points to defend before he gets to the AO.

Ed's Knoxville Challenger QF is certainly a big help and, with nothing now to drop before 19/12, his 189 points now see him at WR 268.

5. Ed 189 ( 189 - 0 )
6. Cam 163 ( 166 - 3 )
7. Liam 155 ( 155 - 0 )
8. Brydan 148 ( 155 - 7 )

Ed, Cam and Liam are in action this week in the Champaign USA Challenger with Cam and Liam ( but not apparently Ed ) down for next week's Columbus USA Challenger.

Aljaz has sneaked back up one to WR 100. Still quite close on points behind him, but with nothing to drop before entry date ( doesn't look as if he has any plans / is able to add ) he should hopefully make the main draw.

Tough times this week with a challenging challenger with of these in action just Liam beating his allocated R1 seed before losing to Brian Baker in R2. He adds a net 5 points for next Monday. Only Cam still down for next week.

5. Ed 189 ( 189 - 0 )
6. Cam 163 ( 166 - 3 )
7. Liam 160 ( 160 - 0 )
8. Brydan 148 ( 148 - 0 )

Joke of a thread. The only way any of these are getting anywhere near the AO is by Qantas economy class.

There is more chance of Evo and Edmund getting to WTF then some of the names getting to the AO on that list.

Thank you for your feedback, sir.

I beg to differ since the mathematics of the matter has been that there was more than just some theoretical chance of making qualifying, certainly with the narrowed down list. For anyone in the 200s or low 300s in the rankings Australian Open qualifying has not been an unreasonable target.

As it is Ed indeed now looks not far out, but possibly did need a couple of wins this week and he is not down for action next week.

Perhaps you have not fully familiarised yourself with the positions.

Steven advised on recent cut-offs in the Columbus Challenger thread :

"Here are the initial -> final AO qualifying cut-offs for the last 5 years:

2016: 252 -> 269
2015: 248 -> 261
2014: 263 -> 286
2013: 247 -> 304*
2012: 259 -> 288

After 2014, the final cut-off seems to have got a lot tighter. I would guess any reasons for that are likely to continue, so we should probably work on the assumption that the initial cut-off will be around 250 and the final cut-off somewhere in the 260s. In other words, another win might be enough, while making the SFs this week would definitely secure him a place in qualifying.

* I think there must have been 3 very late withdrawals that year because WR 304 and 2 players in the 290s got in after lots of players above them had already withdrawn (presumably having decided that making the trip wasn't worth the risk), making the true cut-off 276."

So where does that leave our guys re maybe one or two reaching qualifying and the Aussie Open paying for a hopefully comfortable flight ...

After Cam's QF in Columbus we have :

5. Ed : 189 ( 189 - 0 )
6. Cam : 180 ( 183 - 3 coming off this week )
7. Liam : 160 ( 160 - 0 )
8. Brydan : 148 ( 148 - 0 )

Ed is currently ranked ( and live ranked ) 274, which looks likely to be short, but still worth keeping an eye on.

Cam is ranked 278 on 183 points. Taking his 3 points off he is live ranked 283 on 180 points. He is competing in this week's USA 25K with his first match tonight. Adding 15 points for a final appearance here would take him to 195 points, equivalent to a live rank of 268 with 27 points for the title taking him to 207 points, equivalent to a live rank of 256, which has been good enough for the final cut-off even on the last two occasions.

Next week's futures ( and there is a further USA 25K ) offer the final chances to add relevant points, though there are no entries showing for any of these players.

Aljaz is WR 101 with no sign of anything that will change this before next week's rankings that will count for the main draw entry list, so it looks like he should squeeze in and avoid qualifying..

The ranking points are basically settled now for our Aussie Open qualifying contenders, with nothing now to come off but also nothing further that can now add before the relevant initial cut-off rankings in 2 weeks.

We have :

5. Ed : 189 - current WR 274
6. Cam : 183 - current WR 283 for 180 points ( his latest 3 points will add next Monday )
7. Liam : 160 - current WR 305
8. Brydan : 148 - current WR 325

The only realistic contenders are Ed and Cam and likely 270s rankings at best look like it may ultimately leave them just a bit short when looking at the last two years. But will still be worth just keeping an eye on things.

Aljaz is indeed still WR 101 in the final rankings before the main draw list due out this week. Could initially be tight if there are some relevant PRs and other possibly injured players staying entered for now. If in the still unlikely event that he doesn't make this week's initial main draw cut, I would be amazed if he didn't make the final cut.

 Yep, live rankings show Cam as going up to 278 with those extra 3 points.

Hopefully I don't end up being amazed. Not the way I would wish us to get one player into qualifying.

Well one guy anyway. Presumably Tara will play qualifying.
