Week 39 - Challenger ($100,000) - Tiburon CA, USA (hard)

That was a very interesting match, glad Lloyd came out on the right side of it (he won all of the last 5 points, I think) - he now needs a R1 win to edge ahead of Cam and Liam into the GB no. 6 spot (which, perhaps more importantly for him, would also mean a new career high) but given that the choices (barring withdrawals we don't know about yet) are (3) Smyczek, (7) Escobedo, (SE) Sandgren & de Loore, it's going to be tough for either Lloyd or Brydan in R1.

Lloyd has drawn de loore and Brad has Tim smyczek, tough one for Brad but OK relatively for Lloyd.

Qualifiers placed (today's rankings):

L32:  (Q) Brydan Klein WR 349 vs (3) Tim Smyczek (USA) WR 118 (CH = 68 in April last year)  bleh

L32:  Joris de Loore (BEL) WR 188 (= CH) vs (Q) Lloyd Glasspool WR 293

No head-to-head in either case.

Not a huge surprise - and a very unfortunate draw for a Challenger qualie. I don't really follow them, so I don't know why their rankings are so low right now (injury break? bad run?) but both Rola and Zemlja have career highs in doubles that are well above their current rankings, and both are former top-100 singles players.

Lloyd, having previously not had a BP in the match, breaks to love at 2-6 4-5*, which is quite decent timing.

2-6 *5-5

Not to be then for Lloyd. He was behind for most of the TB and saved a MP at *5-6, then twice had SP at 7-6* and *8-7 but lost the final three points.

R1: Steven de Waard & Alessandro Giannessi (AUS/ITA) CR 536 (199+337) beat Guilherme Clezar (BRA) & Brydan Klein CR 357 (175+182) 6-3 6-4

Brydan cited a back injury as his reason for withdrawing from the singles, and touched it several times during his doubles.
