Another massive 119-man (9 byes) draw & some more unfamiliar Brits, presumably college boys (Derrick hasn't even a pro player profile!)!
QR1: Stephan Drugan (USA) UNR vs Ivan Derrick (aged 18 & quite bright, judging by the 10 As he picked up in his GCSEs at Reed's School, not to mention still baby-faced!) UNR
QR1: Yam Chun-Ming (HKG) UNR vs Jack Fryer (aged 19) UNR
QR1: Jordan Angus (aged 22) UNR vs Lloyd Sergio Watat Njanga (CMR) UNR
Jordan Angus is well known, top 100 college player and standout in his senior year at San Diego State, ie just down the road.
Jack Fryer has just started as a Freshman at the community college just down the Rd from the tournament, ie Irvine Valley College who play in the local community college league the Orange Empire (sounds sinister but in fact a parody of blandness as "my crazy ex girlfriend" set in West Corvina ...will testify) community college league, but given this part of the world is about as fertile as you can get for tennis is still likely to be a very decent standard. For other sports baseball, soccer it is meant to be the strongest community college league in the states.
Ivan Derrick, perhaps he's on holiday or more likely visiting colleges.
I remembered seeing Matt Seeberger's name somewhere before and so googled. I think it must have been on draws when he was playing with Peralta - but the search brought up this story, which is rather charming: www.tennisworldusa.org/news/news/Tennis_Stories/26502/turn-pro-at-29-break-into-the-top160-and-play-the-us-open-matt-seeberger-s-story/ ... all the best of luck to them both. Their opponents have both been at university in Texas, so may not have rankings that reflect their true worth. Interesting partnership for Mr Gosea, but interesting opponents, too. Would not expect to see Miomir Kecmanovic playing Futures for long.
Well I can't say I am too sympathetic, but I hope he is throughly enjoying it, playing tennis in southern Calfornia at 30 what is there not to like. I'd call that living the dream, something usually only available to lottery winners.
