Week 39 - WTA Premier 5 ($2.6M) - Wuhan, China Hard

Such a high intensity match.

Jo finally starting to look like it's taking something out of her, a poor return game, then a dreadful return game to go down 3-4* second set

Jo in a funk, can't find the court as she loses 7 points in a row to go down *3-5.

Saves several set points in a mammoth game

4-5*

Jo had a play at 15-30 but netted, then ripped a forehand cross court for match point. Carla lands a decent first serve and gets an easy overhead put-away a couple of shots later.

Couple of deuces, but we are in a breaker

1-0* (classic serve out wide ---> dtl winner play)
1-1* (Jo nets return)
*2-1 (double fault)
*2-2 (Jo send a backhand long under pressure)
3-2* (well worked point dragging CSN wide, winner into the space)
3-3* (good serve from CSN followed-up with a winner down the line)
*3-4 (another good serve)
*3-5 (absolutely terrible drop shot of a short return from Jo. She should have blasted into the space. Easily passed)
3-6* (hideous forehand error ballooned 6 feet long from the middle of the court)
4-6* (pummels the ball and gets the error)
*5-6 (CSN nets)
*6-6 (huge second serve out wide gets the line. CNS can't get it back)
7-6* (bad return error from CSN, going long off a tempting second serve)

Wow! Amazing angled cross court winner from Jo to seal it. Stunning!

Well done JoKo! Fabulous win. Such an intense match. Will be hard to pick herself up for tomorrow as that will have taken a huge amount out of her, but brilliant. Another top 10 scalp!

Stupendous stuff.
Games nine and ten in the second set were diamond tough from Jo, mentally.
5-4 against Top 10 opponents in 2016

She's managed to keep the results and performance level going pretty much all season.

To round out the all K QF, Kerber/Kvitova will shortly decide Jo's next opponent

Great win for Johanna Konta. I missed all the drama of the tie break ! I expect we're all supporting Kvitova against Kerber now, on her day she's great but I think that would be a better match up for Johanna to get her into the semi final.

Sounds like a really dramatic second set, and a really good win against a player very close to her in the rankings. Kvitova has been playing a bit better recently, so it will be a tough QF either way.

Jo is in the stronger part of the draw left, and looks like facing Kerber who took a very close opening set 76(10) against Kerber.

I'd fancy Jo's chances against Petra, Kerber not so much, but you never know. If she wants to make Singapore, a win tomorrow would be a big boost as the points difference between QF and SF is massive.

Wow Angelique is playing so well she has to play against herself now to get a competitive game
