The script re some remarkable recent stats Steven has been tweeting about re 'ranking upsets' involving British players will be Suzy wins and Mirabelle loses.

Let's have two British wins !

I think 5th seed Ed thrashing a qualifier in Plaisir put an end to that, but yes, until Ed won, 15 of the previous 18 singles matches involving at least one Brit and at least one ATP or WTA ranked player had been won by the lower-ranked player, starting with Brydan's loss to Quiroz in Columbus late yesterday afternoon (UK time) and ending with Lloyd's loss to Hurkacz in the same tournament about 24 hours later!

The reason I counted was because it felt like there had been a lot of matches going that way, but I was surprised by quite how extreme it was.

Of course, the upsets weren't all bad by any means - Cam's win in Columbus, the big win for Farris in Niagara and some of the upset wins in Nottingham went GB's way (even the other upsets in Nottingham were 'GB-neutral', i.e. in all-GB matches), but elsewhere, they mainly went against the Brits, e.g. in Israel, where Brits were 0-3 v lower-ranked players in R2, though Josh's loss to the US college player there couldn't really be classed as an 'upset'.

Mirabelle lost the first set 4-6

Won the second 6-1

Was 5-3 up in the second. The German held. Mirabelle served for the match at *5-4. Got broken.

Now 5-5

Add: Broken again and will now serve for it once more....

And she saves several break points and wins, 7-5

Difficult to get too excited about Mirabelle making another QF in her huge list of R16 and R8 results.

But it's been so thin on the ground in recent months (despite a lot of trying) that it's great to see at least a little success, in a hard match.
