Popped up for a couple of hours from proper oil field West Texas, I thought being from the Midlands was bad, however Midland is worse! Lubbock in comparison is in the green agricultural bit of the plateau so a breath of fresh air. Nice set up at Texas Tech, good viewing from the side but can also look down on all the courts from a viewing platform if you can bare the sun.
Anna Zaja looks a threat tall and powerful does a nice job with her serve and despatched Arconada who although mobile and technically good was just overpowered. Took it out on her racket which I assume she doesn't have to pay for, the racket lost.
Watched Harriet destroy her opponent for Oakie state who although tiny was able to generate a surprising amount of power but even I would fancy myself against her second serve. Harriet looks stronger than she did in the summer and apart from a little problem with the sun in her eyes on serve looked very dominant.
Should have stayed to watch Freya but couldn't resist some Texas High School football down in the oil fields, which was truely a fantastic sporting experience difficult to better for $8 (prime seat)
Looks like a cracking day in store tomorrow great shame they won't get a decent crowd in, it would be lovely to see a similar shoot out at Wimbledon qualifying next year but I would imagine that a few of this group of girls will be given MD wilcards. Looking like a cracking week, I think the early three setters may have been due to the girls adjusting to altitude as I didn't know until I was told but Lubbock is on a plateau. Wish them all well tomorrow.
Sounds like you had a great day! Live reports are such fun to read. Yes Texas Tech get a real home advantage in tennis being at altitude and of course their athletes can run and run when they get down to sea level.
Can you imagine anyone paying to watch school sport in the UK? The fact that it not at all unusual in the States IMO makes them value and support smaller sporting occasions. I'm sure if the BT and our 10Ks were over there, they'd have found a way to drum up some kind of paying crowd.
