Week 37 - ITF ($50K) - Atlanta, USA - Hard

Tight 1st set against a quality player, I wonder what'll happen now, big fight and a big comeback or a similar 2nd set with Gonzalez just edging it, or worst case scenario Laura fading somewhat.

Impressive fightback from Laura so far in this second set - trying to go with Phil's first-case scenario

She won 6 less points in the first set, so the score was pretty fair in that regard.

But has won double the amount of her opponent this set.

Not sure whether it's a big fight or Gonzalez fading but 3 - 0 to Laura, at the moment. Gonzalez started slow in the last set, so better not get too excited !!

90deg in Atlanta right now apparently. Laura seems to be coping better. 6 - 0

Happily 1st part of 1st case scenario accomplished. But I suspect the 2nd part will be much tougher. If she can keep holding serve, chances should come on return, but can she hold her serve !

Or Gonzalez was taking it a bit easy in that set, knowing that they were heading for a final set.

Yeh, maybe.  But Laura does seem to cope with heat quite well.

Laura's service percentages have been gradually improving. So far this set:-
1st serve in 6/10
wins on 1st 6/6
2nd serve in 4/4
wins on 2nd 2/4

Yes. She also must be returning pretty well - throughout the match the other girl's serve percentages are very high, but the win rate very low - I guess (without knowing her really) she pretty much just gets it in, and Laura has managed to attack it well.

Great job !

Despite a wobble at the end, Laura wins the third set 6-4

She could end up playing an old adversary in the QF, Melanie Oudin. Laura lost their 1st meeting as juniors, then beat her on the way to her Wimbledon junior title and beat her twice since then.

Very good win, apart from a mini wobble at the end of the 3rd, those last 2 sets, of course without seeing it, looks very encouraging.
