Naomi can't turn Houdini two service games in a row. Back on serve.
Serve is generally working, but as things progress, and Dodin reads it better, getting more balls in play, Naomi is having to rally more, and her ground-strokes have been poor.
6-2 4-6 3-2*

Looking very shaky now. Didn't like this draw precisely because Dodin is so streaky

This will be a blow ranking wise. To not defend a single point from last year is a real shame in this field. Didn't play great today. Thought she'd pull away after that brave hold for 3-0, not to be.

Plenty of work to be done but hopefully she can finish the year strong.

On a day when the serve went in about as much as it ever does, and won about the same amount of points that it ever does, Naomi was still beaten by a player outside teh top 130, who played very little good tennis in the match.
I'm sure there are positives to be taken...

R1: Naomi BROADY (GBR) [5] 78 lost to Oceane DODIN (FRA) 132 6-2 4-6 4-6

Naomi super first set. Dodin brilliant 2nd set. Both players careless in the final set. From *2-0 Naomi's unforced error count was horrendous. After saving 5 bps for 3-0* it looked like she would get the win but the unreturned first serves dried up while the errors continued. The 2nd serve return dumped in the net on bp at 4-5* rather summed up Naomi's final set.

Also, the forehand block slice return still goes into the net more than 50% of the time. It's a terrible habit that's largely ineffective even when it lands on the middle service line.

She can return really well when she frees up and attacks. Confidence thing?

Yes. I really hate that shot.

And Beck just lost to a lucky loser. Draw wide open for someone to take advantage now.

Disappointing after such a brilliant US open, but hopefully it won't hurt Naomi's confidence too much, and she can still finish the season strong, with conditions predominantly suiting her game.
