"O" thank you for that, really like that you have taken the time to put in ATP rankings and CH's. Great battling by Julian Cash winning the doubles point but against the no 3 ranked player in the nation loosing on two tie breaks, looks like a storming match between Illinois upsetting Julian's Oaklahoma State 4-3 (when the format really works it's very exciting)
Also surprised Emily Smith and Partner no1seeds nationally in doubles lost 6-0 let's hope they get it out of their system before the NCAA doubles.
I was so surprised to see a 6-0 loss to Emily S and partner that I looked at the Vandy write-up of the match. Seems they lost 4 'golden points' at deuce on the spin so not the total whitewash it seems from the score.
Stanford v TCU turned into a real humdinger late last night/early this morning, Emily Arb and partner (#39) getting a win over the more highly seeded TCU no 1 pair (#19) allowing Stanford to take a closely contested doubles point all three matches playing out 2-1.
TCU stormed back taking 5 out of 6 first sets in the singles, Emily being taken down in 2, 6-4, 6-2 by Olaya Garrido-Rivas who she beaten early in the doubles, Olaya is a senior having transferred from USF where she played no.1 at USF so a step up in quality from that generally playing as the 5 seed.
Stanford also lost the No1 singles match but their depth is such that they came back from a set down in 3 to win the remaining 4 matches. It explains why Emily has played 5 this year and there is pressure from behind.
Stanford's No.6 Emma Higuchi is a tough nut, a freshman drafted with Emily, 5ft 2inch girl of Japanese descent from LA. She started the season really well beating some nationally ranked girls in the early season invitationals where as Emily was finding her feet. The really good senior high school players who stay in state particularly if they are from SoCal have a really pleasant final spring beating up some very good local players at Ojai in the very competitive open competitions which keeps them sharp. Emma had won the Ojai women's open. So was battled hardened in the early college season and went deepest of all the Stanford girls in those invitationals. She is nationally ranked at #73 despite playing no.6, I don't think has lost any in conference games and her record is slightly better than Emily's with over 30 wins this season and a handful of loses from those early season invitationals.
TCU with their 4 seniors pushed Stanford hard and it will be interesting to see how far Stanford go in the sweet 16, match ups like yesterday show just what a team game it is when the really good programmes start playing off against each other, Stanford will have to be eyeballs out to win again but get even deeper next year when they add at least one more outstanding freshman!
