Players get awarded ranking points for each win which vary according to the rank of their opponent at the time of the rankings run.
Players get 'penalty points' for each loss which vary according to the rank of their opponent at the time of the rankings run.
To stop teams artificially raising their player rankings by cramming their non-conference season with winnable ties, only a certain number of wins are taken into account at each rankings run.
If a player has more wins than can be taken into account at any given rankings run, the highest value wins are used.
All losses are taken into account at each rankings run.
So the formula for the averages is:
Ranking points earned from the allowable number of wins
And talking of rankings....the latest ones are out:

O Thank you for that! Very useful I will give it some thought, at least understanding it will relieve some frustrations with the process and perceived injustices.
To have 2 No1's is pretty impressive let's hope they can both consolidate their positions in the NCAA tournament over the next few weeks! But also some promising signs for next season at the elite/power conference level.
Julian and Jathan have had very solid collegiate careers playing at the top of the order in power conferences. Also to Vinny Gillespie and the Drake team 5/6th British for winning their conference and playin in the NCAA
Congratulations to Holly on being ranked in her Freshman year she is arguably already too good for Conference USA but because of Old Dominions schedule gets to play SEC schools on a regular basis at No. 1. Hopefully the Emily A's will join her next year although both in very deep teams so we need to be prepared for Emily Appleton to be starting down the order.
Also Emily Arb on making the NCAA tournament and doubles although it looks like Stanford are sharing out opportunity as Lord/Doyle were the better ranked team at No.2 (both are at large selections for the singles)
Dan Little is not far away from taking the No.1 spot at Utah, the guy playing 1 is good through consistency long rallies up the middle of the court but would probably be a 2/3 at Big PAC 12 schools and Dan has improved significantly and has big weapons in his forehand and serve for collegiate level.
Just a little on Alistair Gray who is the only freshman at TCU behind 3 seniors, 3 juniors, 5!!! sophormores of which Rybakov is one. Hopefully he will feature next year with Cam and 3 seniors moving on but he has joined a very strong programme as he should!
The first rounds of the NCAA end of year team championships are underway. The men played the first round yesterday. The first 2 rounds take place in boxes of 4 around the country.
