I presume the plan was to play doubles with Nao here, but she's still in the USO Doubles despite Hev's best efforts.

Thought she'd win a few more games than that

Oh, she was serving at 30%. That might explain that. Never mind! She only snuck into singles at the last minute when those still active in New York were automatically pulled out at the sign in deadline. So even though she qualified here last year the $400 she's picked up feels more like a bonus.

Wonder who she will play doubles with.

Winners of Jossanna's match might meet the top seeds in the second round. Emily faces her singles conqueror again, and has found a good substitute for Nao.

Naydenova, then Moore, argued a point with the umpire for 5 minutes at *40-40 on Emily's serve, and after the delay Emily DF to be broken, but they shook it off and broke right back, 7-6(2) *2-2
Jossanna keep losing the first couple of points of their services, adn are scrambling to hang in there; levelling up twice from a break down in set 2, they'll need to do it a third time 3-6 4-5*

Frustrating from Joss and Anna after a good week last week.

Good win for Team EWSCWC. Important one for Em to defend her points from last year. I only saw a few games during first set and their opponents were targeting Em mercilessly, but she was holding her ground to the best of her ability. They saved 13 of 17 break points, coming through a whole heap of service games on sudden death deuces under pressure, really good to see that. Winning in straight sets despite winning less points overall, doesn't happen all that often!

I thought Moore was poor for someone who won a WTA International not that long ago.

Having recovered from a break down to take the first set 7-5, the girls lose a run of tight deuce games to go down *0-4 in the second against Plipeuch/Omae, who got a walkover.
