Did you ever think, Bob? Pretty amazing to have seen someone go from Futures to GS final. Would say that I now think JM and BS are favourites, but I don't seem to have done the Lopez any favours with my previous comments, so won't go there.
Well actually, don't. As of course I want Jamie/Bruno to win. But Busta has come a long way from that blustery day down in Cartagena when I watched him play Kyle in the 10k futures. More power to his elbow - just not on Saturday.
The umpire who officiated in Jamie's & Bruno's match on the new Grandstand Court yesterday was none other than the Croat (Marija Cicak) who denied Andy the opportunity to replay that crucial point in his quarter-final against Nishikori. Jamie apparently had occasion to confront her over something, but his complaint, according to today's Times, "was made without any hangover spreading through the ensuing points. He got on with the job and hit the match-winning volley".

From what I could make out, Jamie was complaining about the incessant movement in the crowds immediately after the changeovers. He made the suggestion that the stewards should close the gates 30 seconds prior to play recommencing so that those entering would find their seats before the players were ready, instead of closing the gates as the players returned to the court, leaving so many people still wandering around.
I have to say that I find the delays in play from spectator movements have really annoyed me during the tournament. It shows a complete lack of respect for the players IMO.
Very disappointed with spectators knowledge base around Spanish futures 1-7 in 2010-2013! Apauling!!
Mr Careno Busta (born 91) had already won 5 futures and a couple of challengers and was ranked in the top 100 before being laid low by injury in 2012. What Bob saw was the relentless massacre of futures players as he acrued points with a very long string of futures victories.
Regardless it is great to see a committed young player doing so well after a prolonged period of injury. His level then was probably not far off Kyle's (born 95) 18 months ago.
What is more exciting is that Bob may well see a genuine futures player from that tournament through to a grand slam final and that would be Kyle!!!!
Actually, Busta's CH ranking prior to his injury was 133, all of which was well documented on here at that time. There were some other very good players in that futures as well. Namely, Roberto Carballes Baena, who beat Kyle in Murcia the previous week and then in Cartagena, he lost 1&0 to Busta in the final. He has since reached the Top 100 as well.
It was clear at that time that both Kyle and Busta were destined for much bigger and better things. All the more reason to enjoy watching a match of that quality at a futures event.
As BiS says, we were indeed aware that he was a previously much higher ranked player coming back from injury. But it remains the case that BiS saw him in futures and is now seeing him in a GS final - and whatever the circumstances, I still think that's rather lovely. Just wish I'd been there, too! That said, I'd agree - the truly special thing would indeed be seeing Kyle Edmund, a 'genuine' futures player at the time, go all the way to the top. Let's hope for that.
