Mattek Sands looking very aggressive in the opening game but nearly got broken anyway. Jo will need to get on top early otherwise Mattek Sands could become quite a tricky customer.
Solid set, serve very effective, and countered a good number of BMS' net adventures with good passes and a nice lob. Don't want to let Mattek-Sands get any foothold. 6-3
Very tough game seven, with Jo already a break up, she faced her first BP of the match, and there were four of them. But Jo saw them all off in turn, and prevailed.
6-3 5-2*
This already looks like one of those Heather matches with lots of ups and downs and long rallies. First game she looked in control, but that last game was full of errors. Very early days still though.
We're already discussing the surreal world of Heather Watson. She can't hit winners.
She sets the point up, hits the right shot in the right place, connects cleanly. It should be a clean winner. But it's not. Hogenkamp takes five or six steps gets to the ball, and returns it cleanly.
It's like Heather is hitting through treacle. It makes no sense. Even underpowered players like Beck or Flipper get those balls through the court to win points there and then.
It's utterly bizarre, but has been a growing thing this year, she can't win the points she sets up even when she does everything correctly.
Maybe my friends and I are just re-enforcing our opinion through observation bias, but we've all noticed it.
