Week 35 - US Open Main Draw Hard

Big congrats to Caroline Woz - that's a BIG victory over Madison - and a wonderful run of wins for her. Very pleased for her !!! (NB Love Madison's tennis but Caro's not had an easy time in the last couple of years, nice to see her get a good run).

And congrats to 33 year-old Vinci too. Through to the quarters - even though a lot of people said last year's result was a fluke and she was never going to do anything this year.

Sad for Jo, and she played brilliantly at times in this tournament. Particularly gutsing out the win against Pironkova.

But I'm also a big fan of how Sevastova plays so I'm less sad than I might've been. Hopefully she kicks on because it's nice to see something different.

In her presser, Jo did say she was weary, but mostly very honestly that Sevastova was just too good, particularly in how adaptable and flexible she was at shutting down the points.
She's going home to a well earned rest (yay!).
Jo's currently planned schedule to the end of the season is: Wuhan, Beijing, Hong Kong

Me too! Jo, though, was too modest to presume as much.

Have to say I was pretty heartbroken that Venus lost to Pliskova in a thriller of a match

Me too cry

However, really pleased that 18 year-old Konjuh, ranked 92 in the world, put out Aggie, ranked 4, so nicely....

Agree with both sentiments - though I quite like Radwanska, too, so would have been even happier had Konjuh's success not been at her expense.

Karolina Plikova beats Serena 6-2 7-6(5) to reach her first Slam final ! ( on MP Serena missed a big ace by inches and then served a DF ).

Before even playing her SF Angie Kerber now knows she will be WR 1 after Serena's latest over 3 years at the top spot. Be great for Angie if she can go there in style by winning her second Slam of the year. And of course she was a Wimbledon and Olympic finalist as well.

It really has been a fantastic effort by Angelique Kerber to get to world No. 1 - 3 Grand Slam Finals and an Olympic final this year, a feat only matched by Andy Murray. Even when she won the Australian Open everyone thought that would be a one-off career highlight rather than an indication of what she would achieve in the rest of the year.

Her route to the top will give lots of players hope too that you don't have to be a top player by 18 or 19 to make it - Kerber didn't have her big breakthrough until age 23 and reaches No. 1 at 28.

Absolutely. Angie K takes the title, and is No 1.

And, as you say, Kerber was most definitely only a 'Ms. X' on the potential top players list.

I remember a period a few years back where German TV/reporters etc. were all hyper excited about Lisicki and Goerges and Petkovic - and Angie was only mentioned as an afterthought, if at all.

Well done to her.

And, indeed, to Pliskova too. Great tournament.

It's the women's doubles final, with Caro Garcia and Kiki Mlad. against Safarova and Mattek-Sands.

Hardly anybody there.

And more to the point, the French federation are 'boycotting' the event..... :(

There was hardly anyone watching Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares win the men's doubles either. Scheduling the doubles finals four hours before the singles finals ensures it finishes in good time, but obviously most of the ticket holders aren't going to get there that early and watch. Makes a lot more sense to have the doubles after the singles.
