Aga recovers the break, some soft errors from Naomi, but the Pole was lucky too, with the deadest of possible net cords, the ball bouncing twice on the tape and then apologetically dribbling over for a winner. 6-7(9) 2-2*
If Naomi could play like this more regularly, in R1's & R2's at Internationals, week in week out, she can easily add 130-150 points to her total without even needing any spectacular results or deep runs. That would get her mid 50's-60's, which would be excellent. Anything else, big one off wins against top players, is a bonus.
Great effort and application tonight, and made an in form Radwanska really work hard for a set and a half. Invest this for more returns, starting in Quebec City.
Naomi showed how well she can play today, just a shame she couldn't snatch the first set and make it even closer. She seemed to enjoy the lack of pace on Radwanska's shots that a lot of other players don't like and for a while everything she was hitting was going in.
I agree Naomi can build on this and progress at least a bit further up the rankings, as the end of the season is normally where she gets some faster courts to play on (the faster US Open conditions certainly helped her this week)
Certainly an encouraging display from Naomi. At times she was fantastic, lots of super shots, not just the usual aces but some great volleys, smashes, passing shots, drop shots. No terrible errors on those 4 set points but she could have done better on most of them.
From 2-0* in the second set it was rather one-sided though Radwanska got very lucky with her net-cord return winner.
Could have served a bit better and not so sure that the choice of deploying a normal 2nd serve was the right one against a top opponent. Return needs lots of work if she is to beat top 10 opponents. It cost her in the tiebreak and was poor in the 2nd set.
By the end Radwanska could read almost everything Naomi tried.
