Sounds a tremendous effort by Jo and handled pretty badly on a competitive level by Pironkova, although it may often be difficult for the 'other' player.
There sounded times there when there was much more in people's minds than tennis wins and ranking points. But I do note that in running, with Kuznetsova's loss to Wozniacki, Jo has returned to the top 10 in the race and remains pretty well in touch with that important top 8.
Oh, don't be hard on Tsvetana. It's true, because she is very quiet, shy and generally exceedingly lovely, she may just be too nice to ruthlessly take advantage of an ailing opponent, which might make her, in some ways, a bad tennis player. I won't condemn her for it though.
It was a horrible situation to find yourself in, and she was clearly very concerned. She also doesn't have the advantage of knowing exactly how bad Johanna felt. Jo at least knew the extent of what was going on with her, Tsvetana was free to imagine the worst.
Whatever happens tomorrow, just hope for an uneventful match from Naomi, especially given her R1 issues with the climate. We've had more than enough health scare drama in the GB women since Gabi at Wimbledon!
In a world where the usta are being sued by Bouchard I'm amazed the doctor has let her continue.
I'm also surprised, given how badly she was struggling and also how long she needed treatment for, that the match was allowed to continue. Jo looking much better now and actually favourite to win, but you just hope her health issues don't resurface.
Tennis is not boxing: I don't think that the doctor has any right to force a tennis player to abandon and not allow the match to continue.
But mega congrats to Jo. The conditions are brutal out there. Rest up and recuperate !
Extremely determined effort from Jo to win that match. Helped out by a pathetic final set from Pironkova but not many players would have been able to carry on and win like Jo did. Now she can get some proper treatment and rest up.
Think Jo deserves some praise for making Pironkova play so badly mind you as where she did seem happy going toe to toe with Pironkova at the back of the court she seemed to double down on getting Pironkova moving into the net where she wasn't comfortable and also starting giving Pironkova some awkward slice to deal with which she also didn't seem to like. Considering what must have been going on in her mind that showed some real clarity and intelligence to stop the issues she was having from being fully exploited
Quite a remarkable win - and I hope she gets a lot of good medical care now. And yes, all the best to Pironkova, too. Not an easy one all around.
What a determined, battling group of women GB has: all four of them have done themselves and their country proud. I only hope both Ms Watson and Ms Konta are all right in terms of their health.

I'm pretty sure if a doctor though it would be a major health risk to a player to carry on then they would have the power to stop the match. That's not saying the doctor should have stopped Jo as they did the relevant tests, and once she got her breathing under control she recovered quite quickly. It did look really bad for her for a few minutes though.

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't. There's nothing in the rules that I know that says they can.
And it would have to be in the actual rules because, in nearly all things in general life, a doctor cannot force you to do anything - 'patient autonomy' is critical (as American judge Cardozo ground-breakingly said so long ago).
And just think of the potential for abuse if there were: in far-flung countries, where home players were maybe playing.....
(And if there's no question of negligence (as advice has been given but refused) then there's no question of litigation).
Naomi vs. Aga is second after 16:00 UK, on Satchmo
With Andy second on Arthur Ashe at not before 18:00 UK we will no doubt have the pleasure of two Brits on the two main courts at the same time or the conflict that that may bring.
Jo's post match interview and transcript: www.usopen.org/en_US/news/interviews/2016-08-31/johanna_konta_interview_round_2.html
She is astonishingly calm about events.
Also, she mentions it happened once before, about four years ago in the States, but couldn't remember exactly where. I'm pretty sure that was the 2012 Bronx $50K, which was hellishly oppressive conditions, and Jo went into the match having similarly played a lot of tennis previously there were 3, 3hr plus, matches in Lexington alone, two weeks prior, she then flew to Vancouver, and back to NY. The similarities seem quite striking.
Anyway, thankfully, she seems fine, and hopes to play on Friday.
Been a bit of a strange year for Garbine. Her French Open title stands out like a beacon but the rest of her year has been relatively disappointing.
But we'll take it, though of course Jo still has the no small matters of recovering for Friday and then beating Belinda Bencic before the matter of who she could play in the last 16 ( Kateryna Bondarenko or Sevastova ) becomes a relevant issue. Apart from Jo and Bencic, (8) Keys is the only other remaining seed in the third quarter.
