Re the time violation thing I think they need to have a bigger allowance ( 30 seconds would seem fine to me ) but then actually enforce it far more strictly than the huge latitude ( and frankly often dereliction of duty ) given these days ( and then not unnaturally some feel picked upon by an umpire seemingly deciding today's an enforcement day ). I believe it's currently 20 or 25 seconds depending on tournaments.
As mentioned above more latitude has to be given in non ball kids ( or indeed few ball kids ) occasions and common sense says take out reasonable ball retrieval time.
I think that that would be a good solution and compromise. I thought the warnings that Laura was given in the grass court season were fair. The rule has always been time to hit the ball. Laura simply needs to sort her toss out - which I think would help her in any case with her overall game.
I agree that latitude should be given if there are no ball kids, but again five tosses is excessive.
Against Bethanie, Jo had a very small strapping on her left ankle, the first time I've seen that this year. It is twice as substantial today.
No to be unexpected coming into the last part of a busy year, but hopefully it's just being managed as a precaution.
It's certainly not stopping her player rather nicely, so far! *4-1
