RE: Week 35 - US Open Main Draw Hard

All in all, a really good result smile

Laura showing that she's making big progress and Naomi showing she's not in the top 100 by accident.

Each of those is rather dependant on the other one being true in a close match

Though I do gather that it was for large parts indeed a pretty good level match.

Glad that Naomi won to be honest although I see from Steven's poll that the majority were in Laura's corner. In terms of this specific event and where they are right now I think getting into the MD through qualifying was a satisfactory result for Laura whereas Naomi really needed to kick on and get past the 1st round to feel this was a success. Makes both of them winners in my eyes.

In broader terms, I like Naomi and I personally feel she has done a fantastic job of slogging her way into the top 100 the hard way with little or no support. When we moan all the time about our over pampered juniors packing it in as soon as they get a dose of reality on the pro tour I think Naomi is a fantastic example of someone who has done everything the hard way and made the most of the talent that she has and so I am always going to cheer for her and have had no difficulty in warming to her whatsoever.

She's got WCs hasn't she? That would have given her precious money and points.

And arguably Naomi ( and her family ) have largely made their own bed over the years.

But she has done extremely well in all the circumstances and big credit for that.

Well I called that wrong. Naomi I thought was very good, playing back to the level from the start of the year. Laura played well for a set and a half, but faded, maybe because she was playing an opponent who was playing solid top 75 tennis, and couldn't sustain the intensity. Naomi looked so comfortable on court, and I really hope she keeps up this form until the end of the year. Looks like Beechy had to head back to the Uk as Lucie Ahl was back court side. Great work by Fitzy. This really was a bonus tournament for Laura, so hopefully it won't derail her very positive current form.

Gutted for Hev, everything crossed that the blood tests comeback all clear, and that this illness is just temporary.

A deserved win for Naomi, although Robbo looked like she is moving in the right direction, looks fit, some decent movement, plenty to work on mind. Some of Naomi's serving was on the money

Really enjoyed that match. Although Laura moaning and growling made me dislike her, a bit spoiled little rich girl strikes of, so I'm glad the working class guts of Naomi pulled through. Northern Grit indeed

Am I also right in saying thats her GB number 2 now? If she's not it must be really close with Heather.

It's a Naomi "really close with Heather", but still #3 for now.

Live, Heather is out on 872 points, Naomi is still going on 857 points. A R2 win will clearly do it, but in all likelihood she will be facing Aga Radwanska in R2.

( Steven on the ball with provisional post US Open points already updated ).

Glad some prefer Naomi's working class moaning   And the guts were hardly one way. Hey Ho.

I appreciate it was both way Indiana I just think Naomi deserves it more, works harder and hasn't been given it to her on a plate as much as Laura. Robson isn't very likeable compared to the rest I feel especially when compared to Heather for example.

One thing I have never seen Laura do before but she achieved several times in this match was to chase down a drop shot and angle it away for an immediate winner. That required very good speed across the court and good positioning when she arrived to achieve the accuracy and speed of shot.

Aga through very comfortably, and so is confirmed as Naomi's next opponent.

Laura's 40 points from qualifying will have her back up to about WR 230.

She now has no further counters due off in the next 6 months and includes 4 counters of 1 point and one of 3 points. So if she can carry on her form of late she has a very big window to move significantly further up.

Yes. And it's well possible that that's the way Naomi sees it (and Laura knows it). Hence the 'slight frostiness' between them....
