Gasquet was certainly not striking the ball with his usual level of ferocity, the back issue which caused his withdrawal from Rio, is an obvious explanation. But he did beat Evo last week, so he was still a tough opponent, given his stature in the game. Kyle was simply brilliant, the fearhand just staggeringly lethal, and serve was good too. Also mentally strong to never blink when the finishing line came was also a standout for me.
A back injury doesn't really affect mobility - it's the torque when you wind up for the shot - so, as noted by some, you can't hit through the ball properly.
But, as Sim says, he wouldn't have played if he didn't think he had a good chance.
And tons of players play with minor injuries all the time.
So it's still a brilliant result, whatever.
Either that or it was that acid yellow that did the job !
That would tie in with Gasquet looking to me surprisingly tentative in his shots in some of the action I saw.
As I said I didn't really see much, and Kyle was very good in the little bits I did see. So I can't really say how much Gasquet was maybe effected. But if he was often not hitting properly through the ball that's got to disadvantage him.
Escobedo is very under-ranked, and will be a real handful in the second round. Should hopefully be a good match between two very bright young prospects.

I saw Escobedo at Ilkley and Nottingham and he basically hits the cover off the ball. So it should be a battle of fearhand's, and whoever can stay in the rally the longest to generate the error.
Well done Kyle. I'm pleased for him. I've read the Beeb report and it mentions nothing of Gasquet's lack of form. While I am all for spurring the Brits on and being positive about their chances, I also think that it should be realistic. Yes, maybe Kyle would still have won if Richard was 100%, but why not let the public know he wasn't to manage expectations for our guy?

I've long since given up on expecting balanced reporting from the beeb. I'm a big F1 fan as well and quite frankly their bias (along with a lot of the British media) towards Hamilton makes me feel a bit sick sometimes. It's unbalanced to the point of absurdity most of the time. From what I saw a) Kyle played superbly and deserved to win b) Gasquet was clearly having trouble and looked a good 10-15% down on power and depth, which doubtlessly aided Kyle. It doesn't detract from the win AT ALL, but still, it would be nice to see some objectivity.
