GSM Kyle Edmund beats Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.
Fairly comfortable win, good serving, solid backhand and the forehand a potent weapon as always.
Best career win.
Didn't see that much of it, just more near the end. But certainly some big shots and that is a big win ( who was saying about Kyle not having that many )
I didn't see any restriction in terms of Gasquets mobility (Kyle made him run) he just kept on hitting it into Kyle's wheelhouse.
Kyle's tactics pretty sound, got good power into high bouncing forehands, backhand beginning to become really consistent frequently rallied it out cross court but I suppose he's going to get plenty of practice unleashed the forehand as and when. Kyle played some really good tennis.
Quick work by Helen Parish as well. I went to check if that was a CH winning scalp for Kyle and she has already updated the table to show that Gasquet is indeed the highest ranked player Kyle has beaten at WR15.
A back injury doesn't really affect mobility - it's the torque when you wind up for the shot - so, as noted by some, you can't hit through the ball properly.
But, as Sim says, he wouldn't have played if he didn't think he had a good chance.
And tons of players play with minor injuries all the time.
So it's still a brilliant result, whatever.
Either that or it was that acid yellow that did the job !
Forget about whether Gasquet was 100% fit or not (although he looked fine to me), Kyle was simply outstanding. He bossed just about the entire match. Really impressive in the 3rd when he went a set down too. So composed in the rallies and devastating when he needed to be.
What a start to the US Open for Team GB. 1 down, 7 to go.
Am on a ship back from holiday and so couldn't follow the ups and downs, but hearing what people are saying about the match, all I can say is: Just amazing, well done Kyle!
L64 : Kyle Edmund WR 84 v (WC) Ernesto Escobedo WR 201 (=CH)
Escobedo won by retirement when Lacko pulled out at 2 sets all. Escobedo is a talented young player who, if I'm not mistaken, "won" his WC place in via ATP Challenger Series as they have each year in the US, but if Kyle can play like he did today, you'd have to make him a strong favourite.
