Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open

The silver lining is some more recovery time before the DC.

really hope Delpo can take it home from here. If his fitness lasts, I think he will put away Stan and Nishikori with ease. Final might be a different proposition.

Murray hasn't made the semis here since he won it, four years ago. His weakest slam by a considerable distance.

Well that's that then.

If I was a betting man, I would be putting a fiver on Monfils getting injured and giving Djokovic another W/O.

Come on DelPo. This is your time.

On the plus side, Andy now has a couple of days extra in which to prepare himself for the DC... hmm

Arrrghhhh !!!!!

In spite of all before and the head going I thought he'd have it when he got back to *4-4 as did bet365 having him effectively 64/36 favourite in a 2 set all 4 games all match and 73/27 at 5-4*.

But ....

And sorry but just now I'm not thinking much about any possible Davis Cup silver lining, bonus or whatever. I very very much more cared for another Andy Slam.

Come the time of course I'll want us to win.

Hard to describe just how bad that performance was after the decision to replay the loud noise point. Immature, awful decision making on the court, routine shots landing way too short, serve went to pieces in the final two sets.

Andy had 21 winners and 21 unforced errors after 3 sets. In the final two sets 8 winners and 25 unforced errors.

Nishikori a deserved winner who played plenty of super tennis but even he was guilty of letting Andy back into the match twice in the final set through giving away his serve with 3 or 4 unforced errors in a game.

Well that was a surprise. Didn't see it, but it doesn't sound very pretty towards the end. Ah well.

When he is like this, Andy seems like a tormented character. Really painful to watch - and shame is I remember it well from when I played as a youngster (nowhere near this level of course!). When you get your head like this it is so hard to shake off but what is hard is the way his box has to soak it all up Lendl was clearly cross and I suspect words will be had. When you see that happening it is not a surprise Amelie ended up leaving...

thing is with Andy, I suspect it wont make a lot of difference. His interview said he wasnt too disappointed , he has had a good summer and I suspect in DC next week he will be at full guns blazing as he now has a few days more to chill and get into the right shape of mind

Yes, Andy reacted badly to the umpire's inconsistent treatment of that noise (what was it - feedback on her mike, something banging in the aircon??) but I also think the small rain delay and the closure of the roof turned the match after the first set.  I don't think think playing indoors affected Andy's game but I think it helped Kei's. And he admitted in his interview that being able to speak to Chang had helped him change his tactics and get into the match.  And of course, coming back from such a bruising first set got the crowd vociferously behind him which probably also helped Andy's melt-down once the umpire had lit the fuse.....  As world #2 he should have been able to rise above all that and I think, largely, he did in the 5th but It was such a close, emotional encounter by then, genuinely anybody's match.

I agree I felt uncomfortable about the pressure he puts on his box, but it is his deeply competitive streak that has made him the best modern day tennis player ever produced in the British Isles.

When he looses he doesn't like it, one sees the pain and desperate attempts to motivate. I don't think one can have one without the other, he was polite afterwards but you could see how much it hurt and that's after what must be the best year ever.

A slam a gold medal, 2 slam finals and DC semi to come.

What we witnessed last night was a man doing his best but running on empty because of past achievements. A fresher opponent at the top of his game.

In that context he gave his all and with Andy that process builds to a crescendo of psychological capitulation.

I've just read his presser. I must admit it leaves me abit concerned. He seems abit too accepting of his loss. He doesn't even see it as one that got away. He says he wasn't really too tired out there either - I don't know whether that is just to be nice to Kei, but if he wasn't too tired why was his level so low for the latter part of the match.

In agreement with a few comments I've read, I really don't understand why he lost it over a noise on the PA. Sure it's offputting, but to let it affect you for over a set in a GS QF seems a little crazy to me. Same with the butterfly/moth. I admire Andy as a true professional who works hard and leaves no stone unturned in his quest to be the best, thus I really don't understand why he put all that preparation to waste getting his head focussed on the job in hand.

I only hope that it comes out later that there was a reason for his lack of focus tonight, and that whatever it was it's sorted out. It was painful to watch his level tonight. Nowhere near his best. I'm abit numb about it - as it seems is Andy

I'm not sure that there was any more reason for Andy's loss of focus than these alluded to. Re the PA noises, and more particularly that break point ( which won would have had him 2 sets to 1 up and *2-1 up in the fourth ) events my man, events, and his apparent ongoing reaction to this event was awful.

Once he was full on ( in attitude if not necessarily quality ) in the fifth and as I saw mentioned had his "I shall not lose" face on then, particularly it not being Djokovic on the other side, it did come as a surprise that he did lose. But he had helped put himself in the position that he well could.

I had really high hopes for this US Open the way he and Djokovic came in, less so of ultimate triumph as things have proceeded, notably with Novak's ride to the semis, but that was a match that should not have been lost.

It does also lessen the opportunity that has seemed there for #1 after Miami next year. With his run through the clay and grass seasons Andy had built up a 1560 lead in the "race to Miami". If Novak wins the title that is all eroded and Novak even leads that by 80 points. When you have had the career Andy has had, #1 has to be on his remaining 'bucket list'.

It is true what he says, that he has had a great year, though I do think he is much more disappointed than he is letting on. And whatever his faults we are still so so lucky to be following British Tennis in Andy time. Head up, mate.

Maybe now he can't dope himself anymore he is doping the opposition?  Did I just say that out loud.

Well, well, Monfils just limped off the court at the end of the second set. Can he survive ?
