Quote from Dan in today's Times in respect of his impending encounter with Zverev:
He can take the racket out of my hand if his serve is working. It's going to be good fun to go out there and hopefully get a good court.
Anything is a bonus now. I'm ready to go home. It's been a long seven weeks on the road over here in the United States and this is now the last push on the trip. I look forward to it.
That "I'm ready to go home" remark sounds a bit ominous. I hope it doesn't mean that he's going to roll over for the German.
Guess we know the answer to this one now SC
What a terrific win by Evo. Easy one next against Stan the Man. Anything is possible.
L64: Kyle Edmund WR 84 defeated (WC) Ernesto Escobedo (USA) WR 201 by 5, 4 & 4
L64: Dan Evans WR 64 defeated (27) Alexander Zverev (GER) WR 28 by 6-4 6-4 5-7 6-2
L64: (2) Andy Murray WR 2 defeated Marcel Granollers (ESP) WR 45 by 4, 1 & 4
Absolutely stupendous win by Dan! Never expected that when I surfaced this morning!
*****
L32: (2) John Isner (USA) WR 21 (CH = 9 in April 2012) vs Kyle Edmund WR 84
Head-to-head: 0-1 (Isner beat him by 4, 4 & 4 in the last 64 at Roland-Garros earlier this year)
L32: Dan Evans WR 64 vs (3) Stan Wawrinka (SUI) WR 3 (= CH)
Again, no head-to-head
L32: Paolo Lorenzi (ITA) WR 40 (CH = 39 last month) vs (2) Andy Murray WR 2
Head-to-head: 2-0 (Andy beat him in three in the first round at Adelaide in 2006 & in two in the semi-final of this tournament in 2005). The Italian must be something of a late bloomer: he's 34!
Kyle at 64 in the live rankings looks pretty safe on that number. There are only three players below him that are still in the tournament. The two closest to him, Ryan Harrison and Jared Donaldson would both have to win two more rounds to catch him. Harrison would have to beat Baghdatis and then probably Monfils, while Donaldson would have to beat Karlovic and probably Nishikori. For me, the biggest threat though comes from Del Potro. He is much further behind, but as we know, he is capable of going deep into the tournament,
As for Evo, who is now at 52 in the live rankings, two of the three immediately below him prior to their R2 matches won as well. Chardy lost so is out of the picture. but Youzhny and Marchenlo still pose a threat and could overtake with just one more win. Youzhny plays Djokovic though so unless Nole is really injured, I only see one result there. As for Marchenko, he plays Kyrgios so who knows what will happen there. Of course Delpo could upset the apple cart as well with a SF appearance.
On the plus side, a win for Dan should see him into the Top 50 for the first time, although only just. The additional 90 points would have him at 49, with the same threats above still relevant. A victory for Kyle over Isner, would boost him about another 10 places to 54.
Whatever happens, it's exciting times for Brits at this level. Long may it continue.
And as an after thought, Kyle and Evo are giving Leon plenty to ponder, don't you think ?
In some ways it's a bit unfortunate to come up against a "Top 4" in R3, but hopefully the match will be on Ashe and Dan comes out swinging.
No repeat of the tightness we saw against Fed please.
Plus he still has the doubles as one half of the Bad Boys Club! Such a shame their R2 today has been scheduled on an outside court - a bit of a clanger by the organisers I'd say...
I had no time first thing to look beyond Evo's win & the identity of our three boys' opponents, so it's only now, as I update my copy of the drawsheet, that I see that Lorenzi put out Gilou (30) by 3-6 6-2 6-2 6-7(1) 7-6(3), but it took him four hours & 54 minutes to do it!
Excellent result for Dan, am so pleased for him! The ranking points will help him gain direct entry to many of the European/Asian indoor tournaments that make up the rest of the year. Very tricky decision for Leon to make re. the DC. A nice problem for him to have... Dan has kept his nose to the grindstone over the summer. He deserves a proper break now!
I wonder what Dan's thoughts are re. playing doubles a bit more regularly. His hands are easily good enough though he'd probably like to be taller so he can bash his serve harder and have a longer wingspan. He is probably going to be playing fewer matches now that he is cutting it with the big boys (hope I'm wrong on that though!), so playing doubles would probably not be too much of a problem physically. The $12k he has won for doubles so far is absolutely trivial compared with his singles prize money, but is more than he won for winning the $100k challenger in Taiwan. If his form drops or he has another injury, he'd be glad to have the cash in bank.
A downside of Dan's success is that we won't be able to watch his matches on USTA.com anymore....
5 - Spain
