Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open

Thought it was a thoroughly professional performance by Kyle, looked a bit edgy in the 1st set, but always had a little bit in hand, not much but enough. There was one point which stood out for me, one where he wasn't in camera shot, he was so far back, got to two tough defensive shots, then finished it off with a sublime lob.
Will be tough against Isner, given what happened on the clay at the French, but everything a bonus from here, he can play without any pressure.

Steve Darcis doing his best to tire Isner out at least as he takes the 3rd set in a breaker by 12-10. Can he go even better and repeat his "come from 2 sets down" victory in the opening round. The winner of this one plays Kyle in R3.

Report, such as it is, by the Beeb on another satisfying win for Kyle.  At least it gives some indication of Kyle's own assessment of how he played.  His opponent in the next round will be the big man, who's just beaten Darcis by 6-3 6-4 6-7(10) 6-3.  A stern test...

Well well well. Ryan Harrison comes from a set down to dump Raonic out in 4 sets. That's a huge upset, and a super win for the lad.

Just watched most of that match.

Ryan reminds me rather of Dan Evans - not the backhand, of course, but the pace of game he plays at, the serve, the bend, the way he holds himself....

Mind you, Milos Raonic couldn't play from half way through the third set - his leg had completely cramped up - he was serving off one leg, looked really bizarre (lots of double faults) - the conditions have really taken their toll on some of the players.

French commentators suggested that there was more to the Raonic collapse than just cramping. Must be very tough on him to do so well and then fall apart physically in rather cyclical fashion. Numerous interesting upsets. Most notably for the GB doubles players, the Inglot/Draganja section of the draw changes with the ouster of Dodig and Melo by Nicholas Monroe and Donald Young - though they'd need to get to the 3rd round for that to affect them.

Grand slam prize money is remarkable. Kyle Edmund is taking home $140,000 (YTD grand slam earnings: approx. $277,000 iirc) minimum for his R3!

It also makes me think of the tie break tens' ridiculous prize money of $250,000, which Kyle bagged by winning 37(!) points over the course of an evening. For comparison, Kyle's current 2016 grand slam earnings haul is a result of Kyle winning 108 games(!) (though only three matches), playing in and losing another 98 over this time. At a bare minimum of four points a game, and ignoring tiebreaks (forgive the irony), Kyle had to serve the ball or return the ball over 824 points. More realistically, you must be looking at around double this amount. Pro rata at TBT rates, that would be worth $5.5 million (or $11m at the extended projection)! A pointless exercise but that prize money was, in essence, crackers.

So confident Kyle would win yesterday that I have been saving myself for the 3rd round, Isner again!

This time on a faster high bouncing surface (lost to him on clay in Paris 6-4 6-4 6-4. Playing Isner and winning is dependent on delivering a return of serve masterclass.

Although Kyle's best surface is clay, he loses much of his advantage on that surface against servebots. Paradoxically there should be an improvement as Kyle's serve will give Isner more problems on hard, so anticipating a tie break fest 7-6 7-6 just hope Kyle can bide his time nick a few and stay in the game.

Very good to hear about Kyle's increased movement. Isners strengths and dealing with them are exactly the areas Kyle needs to improve, i.e. mobility and scampering around on return of serve, capacity to go 5 (no problem for Issie as he gets so many free points on serve)

It is to quote Joanna and Jen "absolutely fabulous" that Kyle finally finds himself deservedly at the top table testing himself repeatedly against top 20 players looking for incremental improvement.

Although a lot of this is down to intrinsic qualities within Kyle, particularly his pragmatism, commitment and work ethic, a big hand to Ryan Jones as Kyle has had a stonking 6 months and to be fare although Kyle has worked his way through a few coaches a big hand should go to some of the guys (LTA coaches) who have supported and mentored him through futures and challengers, Beechy, Hilts even Greg? and BiS (Perhaps that is too much to bare for some, although he was also involved in junior Davis cup Greg not Bob (who runs the fan club and fledging break away Kyle Edmund massage board)

Although he is by no means there yet and with Andy as a mentor and role model he's got his work cut out! What a fantastic week so far

Bring on the big man!

Raonic may well have had other issues - I had German commentary and don't understand German so anything could have been happening

He was certainly having problems with his left wrist and forearm too (had a trainer to help with that, as well as massaging the legs). But the legs seemed a bigger issue to me. He was also quite red in the face (as were many of the payers though) - in fact, he just looked shot away.

NB I'm 99% sure I was Hev's mum in the crowd - couldn't tell who she was cheering for, just getting in a bit of tennis !

And a huge congrats to Kyle - a lot of his career has been steady progress (and extremely good, given his age). But this has the feel of being a bit of a cosmic leap.... very exciting.

I don't think so, tipping point perhaps, cosmic leap no, just incremental improvement in consistency, shot selection and understanding when to be aggressive. Undoubtedly beating Serbia has infused him with self confidence.

Gasquet I felt was vulnerable and the form book suggests he should have won convincingly yesterday which he did.

Now if he takes Isner apart in similar fashion, well, I will eat my A's hat, again, and gaze to the sky's expecting Kyle to be closely following some cattle in the lunar high hurdles!

Just to note that a large tropical storm (Hermine) is likely to affect the US Open at some point between Sunday and Tuesday. Not at all clear exactly how or when or to what extent: projections have been - literally - all over the map. So it could be next to nothing. Or quite a bit of wind. Or more. But it might affect scheduling for the Edmund/Konta part of the draw (if both get that far).

And Vesely has not pulled out thus far, so it looks as if Colin Fleming's trip to New York will have been productive in terms of media, but less so in terms of tennis. A genuine pity.
