Day proves to be as good as her Junior rep would suggest. Naomi went a break up in set 2, but there was no follow up, and Day cruised to victory.
What an awful 'day' for the GB WTA team
How good must Gabi be that she was beating Ms. Day at Wimbledon whilst seriously ill!
Very depressing stuff, not just the defeats, but the utterly routine nature of them - nine total games between them, across four sets - by opponents both ranked considerably lower.
QR1: Heather WATSON (GBR) 76 lost to Maria SAKKARI (GRE) 96 1-6 3-6
QR1: Naomi BROADY (GBR) 81 lost to (WC) Kayla DAY (USA) 424 2-6 3-6
Well that, at least, is a good piece of news for a GB player here today. It's much better than her original draw against Kasatkina. Not sure who withdrew to make it so, but I don't think Jo's draw can be further adjusted now (?), even if there are further withdrawals.
But, as we've already seen, Q's could be dangerous here.
I'm not surprised by the results. Players involved in the US Open are bound to be focused on that rather than the minimal points and prize money on offer in qualifying here. Different if they happen to get into the main draw.

Well they happen to get into the main draw by coming through qualifying. I would have thought that Heather in particular could have used the boost of some good play and wins under her belt.
Re Jo's withdrawal hopefully just taking that pre US Open break that many were wishing and nothing otherwise untoward.
Johanna Konta has withdrawn from @connecticutopen.
Gutting for us fans to have nothing to follow next week, but I suspect a really good move for Ms Konta in the longer term. It's been a long run for her and a week off for recharging mind and body is a great idea.
bad would be meekly losing to established top 100 players - meekly losing to someone who was playing futures a year ago and an obese 16 year old is a sick joke

They clearly do seem to be bad results. But the only relevance I see re Sakkari playing futures equivalent tournaments a year ago is that in the here and now she is a greatly improved player to be WR 96 and race #76.
It's a strange feeling as a supporter to be pleased that there's no interest next week, but that's how I feel about Joko's withdrawal. I think it's the right decision.
We can only hope that the extra rest and practice gives Hev & Naomi time to find something to get them back on a positive incline again starting at the USO.
Tangentially, unless someone in the top 32 doesn't play, I think Monica Puig, (at WR34, with only Vika definitely out, she's 33rd) could be unseeded.
But, then, there are going to be a lot of potentially tricky R1 opponents for this particular GS: Safarova, Makarova, Jankovic, Bouchard, Petkovic, Gavrilova, Wozniacki, Hoerges, Lisicki etc.
