I would think that Naomi is tied to a contract for team tennis, which means she couldn't make qualifying which starts today. Nicole Gibbs is in the same postion and tweeted about it. And of course, Heather is in the wrong country ...

 She was knocked out of the mixed doubles in Rio on Friday night and Cincy qualifying started Saturday morning - so without the aid of a teleport there was no way of getting there in time.

Thanks, I didn't realise Cincy qualies started so early, and thought they might have given her the option of a later match, day later start given the circumstances.

Serena is a very late withdrawal ( shoulder ). Misaki Doi is a very LL who inherits the #1 seed's bye into R2.

Angie Kerber will now go to WR 1 if she wins the tournament, Serena having held that position for 183 successive weeks.
