L32: Kyle Edmund WR 83 vs Taro Daniel (JPN) WR 118 (CH = 85 in April)
There is no head-to-head.
Easy peasy for the defending champion after a slightly nervous beginning:
L64: (2) Andy Murray WR 2 defeated Viktor Troicki (SRB) WR 35 by 3 & 2
Plenty of energy conserved for his first round doubles match with Jamie later this evening.
*****
L32: Juan Mónaco (ARG) WR 108 (CH = 10 in July 2012 - he's 32) vs (2) Andy Murray WR 2
The pair haven't met since the Shenzhen semi-final in 2014 (hard), when Andy won by 2-6 6-3 6-0. The actual head-to-head is 3-2 in Andy's favour, all three wins coming on hard courts.
When you're playing a home team in the Olympics, expect the unexpected. That said, of the four doubles 'upsets' I'd say this is the only one that is a true surprise (barring the home Olympics rule): Cabal and Farah are a very good team; Venus Williams was ill playing a team with someone who won two GS doubles last year; and two top singles players (Tsonga/Monfils) do not a doubles team make.
Just out of interest, I haven't really been following, but scanning the results, is this a slow hard court? Seems as if teams/players that prefer slow are doing better than teams/players that prefer fast.

Looks medium slow to me. You don't want to be at the net unless you have total control of the point.
From what I saw Andy/Jaime made some silly errors and silly tactical errors too. They were a break up in the 2nd set Andy serving 40-0 up and then got broken back.
Yes, did seem on the slow side of medium slow to me. Very noticeable compared to some venues of varying pace recently. The ball just doesn't really go through but sits up.
Pity, particularly for Jamie, it was a pretty tough match but still very winnable match. But one of two results yesterday that I'd say clearly enhanced Andy's singles prospects, though the courts will undoubtably be slower than he'd like.
Novak was in bits after his match, but yes very gracious to Del Potro. Novak certainly one person for whom an Olympic title really did matter.
