Week 32 - Olympic Tennis Competition - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Hard

Andy & Hev should be a better team than Andy & Laura were 4 years ago, and a very promising start. A shame for Jo and especially Jamie to lose in a tough R1 match.

Quoth the Guardian...

"Heather Watson might be one of the luckiest athletes in the history of the Olympics. Bundled out of the singles but hanging in to support her mates before heading home, she got the latest of call-ups to partner Andy Murray in the mixed doubles and they are now two wins away from a gold medal. She said after performing brilliantly to help a tired Murray over the line, 6-3, 6-3, against the Spaniards David Ferrer and Carla Suárez Navarro: I had a flight tonight. I genuinely had all my stuff packed, I brought it here, I came here just in case. I had no idea, wasnt sure if wed get in and then just got told, Get your kit on, youre on."

Top seeds out means a real opportunity missed for Jo and Jamie as they'd have played the Brazilian pair in the QF. Second seeds also out but bottom half is stronger I think.

I feel sorry for Jo, out in the singles, and then partnered with a lack lustre Jamie. I know Andy said he's the weaker dubs players, but frankly he's got the power to serve etc himself and his partner out of trouble. I hate to say it, but I really think that Jo/Jamie instead of Jo/Andy was done for Jamie not for team GB.

Ah well, at least Hev is benefiting and they've played together before which is an advantage. Go team GB.

Always thought Andy/Hev would have a better chance really.

Yes Jo was suffering a hangover from her singles exerts but Jamie was quite underwhelming and didnt step up to help her out. Thought he was poor (as he was in mens doubles) and a great opportunity missed for a medal.

BMS is wonderful but Sock also looked like he had played a lot kf tennis and it was a match they could have won being a bit sharper. I suspect BMS/Sock should come through this top half now though. And I wouldn't begrudge BMS that success.

Nadal and Muguruza withdrew and there were no other alternates on site.

Jamie and Jo could volunteer as "Lucky Losers"?

So Stepanek/Hredecka need to win 2 matches for an Olympic Medal. Then you look at the likes of Jo Pavey etc, ridiculous.

Yeah, and Usain Bolt only only needs 40 seconds effort (including rounds) for a gold medal. Ridiculous!

I don't think you can compare Usain Bolt to a couple of tennis players winning a couple of sets of tennis in a limited field somehow.

Cinderella story, as Pica guarantees Puerto Rico at least a silver!

Yes, that's quite something, isn't it. Wholly unexpected, but rather lovely. Great for her. Great for Puerto Rico.
