Having made it comfortably into qualifying I see Gabi has now withdrawn from Vienna.  Very disappointing.  I can't help wondering if we will see her again.  I do hope I'm wrong.

Don't be disappointed. She's in Prague instead.

Ah well spotted, thank you.  I thought I'd checked them all but must have missed that.  There is still hope.  You can probably tell I'm a big Gabi fan and desperate for her to do well again.

And her recent absence has presumably been due to injury since she was photographed wearing a protective boot.

From Instagram

gabitaylor
Finishing the season on a high with 2 finals and a doubles title.  I have to say it's been my most challenging year so far, both mentally and physically. Overcoming setbacks and constantly pushing through. Nonetheless, I have learnt so much from this year for the good and bad, and I'm thankful for that. Without failing you would never learn and become the athlete you thrive to be. I want to thank those who have stuck by me and helped me push through the ups and downs this year. You know who you are. With the support from my team, I physically feel the strongest I've ever felt on court right now and I can't wait to get back into preseason mode after a short break to recharge and start 2020 strong!

Gabi posted on Instagram to say shes back working with David Sunyer, the Spanish coach who was with her during her string of wins a while back. Hopefully a positive step for her.

Yes, hopefully.

I am more encouraged by this than that wordy instagram post above.

Such a brutal sport, just hope Gaby stays fit and gets as good a crack at being as good as she can be in 2020.

Yes absolutely, MUCH more encouraged by this!!! biggrin

Not only did Sunyer have her play better but she was also managing herself much more positively on court when he was coaching her.

Indeed and in all honesty doesn't surprise me and in fact goes a long way to explain her plummet in performance and professional fortune in recent years... It struck me she was covering up rather at times, since she would summarise quite positively what had obviously been an abysmal run of results, suggesting she was rather hiding from herself rather than facing up to the fact that she was performing nowhere near where she had been.

This seems similar to Katie Swan, I think these lonely lives on the tour can be very debilitating if the player doesn't have the right kind of physical mentoring support... So wishing Gabi a lot of luck and hope she can use this as a turning point for her and her life whatever her next steps are in tennis and her life...

Well done Gabi for being so brave and sharing this. I hope she is getting the support she needs to get herself back to a better place and I wish her all the best for the future.

I think being on the world tour and the grind of living in hotel rooms, hostels, flying every week, whilst worrying about ranking and money , must be a very tiring and frankly , to me, horrible life.

I feel for her, I really do.

I'd like to see this lockdown and the playing of national events as we start to come back, leading to a real rethink on the tour structure, towards some sort of continental or even subcontinent structure, more like golf has.

Really feel for Gabi and while no doubt it isn't the same for everyone in general I feel better out than in. I do hope that she feels a real benefit for sharing in this way and receives lots of support. I think she may be surprised by how much she does receive.

In generaI I am always a bit uneasy about a lot of criticism and disection of drop offs in tennis form ( and I am not immune from doing this ) as there can so often be serious factors that we don't know anything about. Quite apart from the fact that I just much prefer to accentuate and give more time to the positives in British players' performances.

All the best to Gabi.
