Boys: World Junior Tennis Finals (U14), Czech Republic, clay - Week 31

The team of Benjamin Heynold, Barney FitzPatrick and Toby Samuel qualified for the 16 country finals starting tomorrow. We have been drawn in a group with Italy (top seed), Korea Republic (seeded 7) and Mexico, opening tomorrow against Korea. Italy have 2 boys ranked in the TE top 5 and won the European Summer Cup. The winner of the round robin progresses to the semi-finals, while the others enter 5-8, 9-12 or 13-16 play-offs

The key match today was the top singles between Benjamin and 2014 Eddie Herr U12 winner Dongjon Park. Barney lost the opening singles 6-1 6-3 but Benjamin took the opening set comfortably 6-1 and had 2 matchpoints in the second set tiebreak but the Korean saved them and turned the match round for a 1-6 7-6(8) 6-3 win. Barney and Toby gained consolation in the doubles when the Korean pair retired a set down.

It means they face the daunting prospect of having to beat Italy tomorrow to retain any hope of reaching the semis. Italy beat Mexico 3-0 today. Live scores with some stats should be available tomorrow (look for court 10) at www.tkplus.cz/wjtf2016-livescore.htm

Toby Samuel came in for Barney in the singles and did well to push the Italian number 2 (Lorenzo Rottoli) to 6-4 in the third. Benjamin lost the top singles 6-4 6-2 and Barney/Toby went down 7-5 6-3 in the doubles. That means we play Mexico tomorrow, with the winner moving into the 9th-12th play-offs.

We won the final round robin match against Mexico 3-0: Barney winning 6-0 6-7(4) 6-3, Benjamin 7-6(5) 6-3 and Barney/Toby combined for a 6-3 6-2 success in the doubles. Our 9th-12th place play-off is against Thailand tomorrow. Surprisingly second seeds France are in the same 9th-12th play-off section, despite fielding two highly rated players in Harold Mayot and Lilian Marmousez - they lost to both the seeded USA and more surprisingly Uruguay. Britain's group was won by Korea (who won the title last year) after a 2-1 defeat of Italy.

Very comfortable today for Britain and France, recording 3-0 wins to ensure an Anglo-French clash for 9th place. Barney won 6-1 6-2, Benjamin 6-3 6-0 and Benjamin/Toby took the doubles 6-4 7-5. The final will be between China and Argentina

The boys end up in 10th place after a creditable 2-1 defeat to second seeded France. Arthur Cazaux edged past Barney 6-2 4-6 6-4 before Benjamin thumped Harold Mayot 0 & 3. Barney & Toby lost the doubles 1 & 4
