This seems to be EWS's lucky day, after a substitute in Q1 she now has a potentially winnable match in Q2. The ranked player she was likely to meet retired when 3-0 up, so Emily meets another unranked player in R2.
PaulM will be pleased.
And, yes, AliB - wish that my words had that effect every time !
Good win for Katy over one of the ITA National College Player of the year who took a set off of Halep at the US Open a few years ago. Glad to see Freya, Em and Laura come through. Tough draw for Harriet if she was fully fit as Rogowska has brutal groundstrokes if she's motivated.
Laura : should be winning that match much more comfortably, but a great chance in the next round to find better form, before a tougher FQR.
Em : looks like the injuries are behind her, playing well again.
Katy : really good looking win, hopeful for more progress.
Freya : similar, and hoping she's over her recent injury setback.

Don't know about Em to be honest. Would be good, but let's see. Here frankly it appears that her QR1 opponent was a gigantic bye.

She posted a pic on her instagram account, where she said she was finally pain free again, so I'm hopeful, but tomorrow will be another test.
Em's win is nice but singles is just a bonus and the chance to bank some extra cash.
Doubles is the focus and key, especially this week with a title to defend. Would far rather she picked up some doubles wins this week that came through singles qualifying (assuming it was a binary choice, which of course it isn't!).
Some reports from on-site yesterday from a local:
(1)Laura Robson (GBR) d. Alexandra Facey (USA) 63 62
I was the most excited about this match up today considering all that Laura has accomplished, but she came out so flat today. Facey was being supported by what looked to be her mom and her sister. You could tell that Facey is more comfortable in doubles as she came up to the net a lot. She had a two hand backhand slice that threw off Laura right from the start. Once Laura figured out Facey's game it was smooth sailing but not comfortably by any means. Facey had some opportunities to really push for that first set. I can see Laura qualifying, but she needs to get it together if she wants to be competitive with the top players again. She was back on court with her coach a couple hours later doing some serious on-court drills. She was practicing a lot better so maybe she is not comfortable in match play.
Emily Webley-Smith (GBR) d. (alt)Emily Ottsen (USA) 60 60
I was so excited to see EWS play Jen Elie, but I saw Elie practicing and overheard she got into the MD at the last minute and I have seen Ottsen's record so I was very intrigued to see how she would do against a quality player and boy was I shown a treat. EWS was on her way to a golden set and once I thought she might do that she hit an error. Then all of a sudden Ottsen had three break points after EWS double faulted twice but then EWS got her act together and then lost only two points in the second set. Ottsen has no business being at this level. She was making EWS run from side to side in the warm up and shanked two overheads over the fence as well. Before the match I thought it would end in 30 minutes....it ended in 31 minutes. EWS has a decent draw to qualify and get some singles points. I think she has a good chance.
Olivia Rogowska (AUS) d. (8)Harriet Dart (GBR) 75 60
Very competitive first set between these two as Olivia was just the slighter more aggressive. Harriet looked to be struggling in the heat and took a MTO to get her thigh worked on at 3-0 in the second. Once the treatment was over, Liv just pummeled her with her forehand and advanced.
(3)Katy Dunne (GBR) d. Danielle Rose Collins (USA) 46 63 64
I love Danielle Collins. The tour needs a player like her. Very tenacious and her KAMANS are EVERYTHING. This was by far the best quality match of the day. It was in the peak of heat and these two had some amazing rallies. In the end Dunne just happened to be the more consistent player as Danielle hit some careless errors at very inopportune times.
(4)Freya Christie (GBR) d. Eva Raszkiewicz (USA) 75 62
Freya dominated the warmup so I was nervous for Eva, but Eva held her own and was very impressive but Freya's power just took over in the end. She did nearly waste a 5-0 lead in the second set but I am intrigued to see if Freya can bring it in a little bit. If she can, I can see her qualify and do some damage in the main draw.
