Post Wimbledon Rankings

A few of our girls have slipped a bit but many others have surged up the rankings over the Wimbledon fortnight with new career highs for Amanda Carreras, Gabriella Taylor, Emily Arbuthnot, Maia Lumsden  and new entry Suzy Larkin. Tara Moore has also made a large move to close in on her career high. We now have ten girls in the top 400 and 24 in the top 1000.

The Wimbledon, and general grass season, prize money has also made for some spectacular changes in the financial affairs of many of our players...

www.wtatennis.com/prize-money-rankings

Tara is the most obvious huge winner, with just under US$100k of her YTD US$115k picked up, which should give her all the resources to hold her own in the Grand Slam qualifying grade over the next year or so.

Katie Swan also makes the top 200, with US$45k of her US$50k coming from Wimbledon. JoKo is over $1M, Heather closes in on $500k, Naomi can pay back her loans, and Laura can underwrite a very long time on the ITF circuit.

Jossanna should be financially solvent.

Of the lower ranked players, Harriet is now the lead earner, with q1 winners Gabi, Katie Boulter, Lisa Whybourne moving ahead of the higher ranked Dunne, Christie, and Carreras.

Maia doubled her career earnings. Sam Murray and EWS will be feeling the pinch.

A good post, Peter.

Looking at Steven's table this morning, six months into the year, I noted that:

19 of the top 25 girls have risen in the rankings since Jan 1st.

That's amazingly good.

Especially when you add that 17 of those rises are really significant (only Mirabelle and Beth have minor rises, the rest are definitely major).

Of the 6 who've fallen, Fran and Katy D don't really count (the drop is very small). Even Heather's is very much a post-Wimbly blip (in my view). Only Em W-S, Laura D and Jazzamay have falls of any real note.

Whilst I wouldn't argue that progress has been very good, there is a bit of exaggeration by looking at the number of rises and falls in the current top 25, including certainly in the lower half players that have come in while others have dropped out largely through their rankings falls. Looking at the movements in the current best has an inbuilt bias.

If you actually look at the top 25 table as at 1st January and look at how many of that top 25 have gone up and down the split is 15 to 10 as opposed to 19 to 6.

These additional four are in respect of big falls for Anna Brogan, Lucy Brown and Eden Silva plus Naomi Cavaday being no longer ranked. Now while there are understandable reasons there and retiring is a pretty good one, it's probably a better indication of the ups and downs.

I tend to think a good comparison is the WRs of each GB ranking, irrespective of individuals, how many have gone up and down over time and maybe the accumulated change. I'll pass on looking at that just now, but I suspect it will look pretty good. Since don't get me wrong I think things are certainly moving the right way.

I understand what you mean, Indy. And that one could include the ones who've fallen out of the top 25 to balance the ups and downs. Which I didn't.

But another way of looking at it is in terms of momentum of the top 25. i.e. of the current top 25, 19 are in a (very) positive, upwards mode. Therefore, in some ways, it doesn't matter if there are others who've fallen away, the current 25 represent the momentum of the moment. That was my approach

I agree with Indiana that just comparing the number of risers and fallers in the GB top 25 isn't a very good measure for the reasons he states - it's the related fact that CD states (that 17 of the rises are really significant) that is the really encouraging thing.

Of course, we should also bear in mind the fact that the GB women had unusually kind draws in Wimbledon qualifying this year and there are a lot of points for winning QR1, especially when you're ranked at the kind of levels most QWC recipients are ranked at. We should also bear that in mind this time next year if the Wimbledon Q draws are more normal (or really unkind) next year and the changes don't look so rosy.

Of course, while the Wimbledon Q draws were kinder than usual, the Brits still needed to take advantage of them against players who, while beatable, were almost all higher-ranked, so the wins they got were still all very big achievements, it's just that some years, they hardly even have a chance.

After achieving a new career high Gabriella Taylor retired from her Junior match and has since been in hospital recovering from a mystery virus. She is in an isolation ward, in stable condition and improving while awaiting blood tests.

WOW. That does not sound good. Hopefully everything works out well in the end for Gabby.
