why is EWS still bothering to play singles? - surely it would help if she concentrated on doubles full time and it can't help anyone but her opponents to keep getting thumped week in week out

I presume economics comes into it. There's only US$720 for winning the doubles title here, so Emily needs to play both to hope to keep the show on the road.

Also, I presume she carries on because she wants to, and she enjoys it.

She's ahead in the second set, 3-2

Harriet was extremely unlucky not to qualify for Wimbledon and must take a significant amount of confidence from a string of really solid performances in qualys. Not at all surprised by today's two set win over an elite junior making the transition to the senior tour.

Considering she lost the first set in 19minutes Em did well to make the second a decent battle. Had half a chance to make things interesting with a break point for *4-2 but let's be honest, she was just warming up for doubles later anyway

Stunning from Harriet. Thought this would be a struggle but she was totally dominant!

Yes, pity she couldn't quite make it 4-2; Em goes down 0&3 :(

Yes. She had a superb week at the Bank of England Club in qualis - so close to the big prize of a MD place.

And by playing extremely well, not by luck or an easy draw....

From the interviews, I think she surprised even herself smile

And, like PaulM, I thought this would be harder.

Excellent result.

If she gets the seed next, it's Caroline Romeo, who is no great player, fairly ranked at about WR 400, and lost to Suzy Larkin a couple of weeks ago.

Harriet's results markedly improved before Wimbledon Qs, with a 25k RU in Korea bringing her an equal number of points. Of her new total of 105 points, about 75 have come since the start of May, so she has very little to defend now for the next 10 months and, closing in on her CH ranking, should have plenty of better opportunities to play in higher-graded tournaments, and continue to rise.

Re the results, up to a point.

But she was knocked out in the first round at Surbiton.

And in the first round at Edgbaston.

And in her last tournament in Korea, she got knocked out in R2.

And there were lots of QFs in 10ks in May and April i.e. nothing very spectacular.

Not saying that she was playing badly (the match at Surbiton was a good one, and she may well have been tired in Korea as it was the week after her Final run).

But in terms of results pure, the Korea final looked wonderful but possibly a 'blip' in the midst of rather mediocre results.

However, it's true that last year her second 6 months of the year were horrible - barely won a match.

So it's pretty exciting - her ranking could (and should) be seriously higher by the end of the year.

Which will be wonderful. She played SO well at Wimbledon, when all the LTA bods were watching Katie B and Freya, and Gabi, and barely giving Harriet a second glance. Good on her....

Yes, really good to see especially after such an unpromising first few months and I can say that right at the start of the year Harriet was playing badly, distinctly underwhelming when beaten easily in Glasgow by a returning Katie Boulter. And even Korea had possibly indeed looked like a blip.

Her play at Wimbledon qualifying seemed really good on paper and was also witnessed by many who were seemingly very impressed. However she has so picked up her game long may it continue and indeed move on.

Harriet has recently left Goslings (just before Wimby I believe).  Think she may have gone back to JTC as Alan Jones was watching her at the Qualies in Roehampton, but I'm not certain.

Sometimes you just gotta hold your head high and handle it. Positives include first match since February with no painkillers. I am healthy again.
