It looks like Naomi Broady is playing World Team Tennis this week, for the Philadelphia Freedoms.

Which should be a LOT of fun. And financially a VERY good idea !

I've always thought it sounded a great format (team tennis in 5 sets (to 5, I think) with one pairing of each sort of tennis playing each set i.e. Men's singles, women's singles, each doubles and mixed) and then add up the games.

Here's her team and schedule:

add: found a photo:

Looks to me that Naomi lost her singles 4-5 against Pauline Parmentier

But aced the womens doubles 5-1 (playing with Sam Crawford)

And the Mixed doubles (with Fabrice Martin) 5-3

It goes on two weeks. Bravo, Naomi, for getting a spot. Brilliant initiative.

(NB John Lloyd is the coach for the San Diego Aviators)

PS Does anybody have any idea how much they get paid? A lot of the numbers I've seen are absolute telephone numbers, but more for 'star' players.

However, even the 'ordinary' players will get enough to swamp their normal earnings, I believe. If so, even MORE congrats to Naomi

Wasn't this the competition where Neal Skupski won the "Rookie of the Year" award last year ?

I also see searching this site that Ross Hutchins played in 2014

And James Auckland played in 2008

But maybe better to move it over to the World Team Tennis thread

PS hang me now but I've never heard of James Auckland.....:(

Shame on you Coup biggrin  he was good friends with Andy Murray and often played doubles with him.  I think there was a story of Andy losing a bet and buying him a large TV for a wedding present but, I could be off with the fairies with that one.  I struggle for what I was doing last week, never mind 2008!

Thank you, Shhh

I was not really in the loop in 2008 (most of non-front-page singles passed me by, never mind doubles cry ) - horrible ignorance.

Thank you - I'll go and google the man and get up to speed smile

I see Andy has been given the honour of carrying the Team GB flag in Rio - well deserved. Shame a few of the other top guys have pulled out, but the Team GB players in the tennis all seem very committed and hopefully can gain a medal or two.

Lovely to see James Auckland get a mention! As an ancient of days, I count him as one of my favourite players (was rather shocked to realise how long it's been since he retired. I really am an ancient of days) Inter alia, as well as being a top doubles player, he had a reputation for being one of the nicest people on the Tour.

Just to note that this week was one of our most successful in 2016 men's tennis in terms of those outside the top 25.

We had 4 different guys scoring points, and 9 points scored in total : Dan Dowson 6, Ewan Moore 1, Mark Whitehouse 1, and Dylan Gee 1

(Week 20 saw 12 points scored in total, but only 3 different men - Farris scored 10)

None of the other weeks come close...
