Boys: 2016 European Summer Cups - U12/U14/U16/U18

You're, of course, assuming that they weren't selected....

Frankly, I'd be very surprised if Jay and Ryan would have gone, even if selected.

Its not a assumption CD, parents and players at Wimbledon were discussing the selections for European championships & summer cups and were disappointed not to be selected.

OK, then.

Then I think that tells you all you need to know about relations between the LTA and some of our top players.

Which is sort of what I was getting at...

We are currently 1-1 against Russia, Max losing 6-4 6-2 but Alastair pulling off a fine 1-6 6-4 6-3 win against Lev Kazakov (was top 30)

The doubles against Russia was lost 6-2 6-2, so today they are playing Portugal to avoid bottom place in the finals. Finn got the team off to a good start with a comfortable 6-1 6-4 win over Salvador Bandeira, but Alastair lost out to Duarte Vale (who is in the ITF top 50) 6-0 5-7 6-4. The doubles will decide again.

Well if they don't wish to select the clearly best under 18s ...

The only two significantly stronger arguably than those selected are Ryan and Jay. Ryan was injured at Wimbledon with a prognosis of being out for a few weeks, and I don't know whether Jay was available for selection or not.

Alastair and Max combined to win the doubles 4-6 6-3 [10-2] so we finish 7th in the under 18s. France beat Germany 2-1 with Elliot Benchetrit and Corentin Moutet edging out Marvin Moeller and Louis Wessels 12-10 in the match tiebreak to take the trophy

The selections were made before the G1 Roehampton and the fact that neither Jay or Ryan had been selected was a hot topic of conversation amongst the parents.

All things considered I think the boys did rather well to finish 7th. Well done boys!

Sorry, didn't mean to probably appear to adversely comment on the guys' performance. Did mean to comment on the selection.

Thanks, Ernie.

As expected, completely as expected....cry

And, indeed, Alexis and Ewan should certainly have been selected in front of Max (and probably Finn) if trying to pick the strongest team.

I believe that Max gets rather a high level of LTA support which, on paper at least, seems out of proportion to results (it's true he's 1999 but that's Jan 5 1999 so it's splitting hairs for anything but convenience of junior tennis entries).

The under 12 Nations Challenge final started today. There are two round robin groups of four after which nations play the country finishing in the same position in the other group to determine final positions. Not a great start as the boys lost their opener against Croatia: Samuel losing 6-3 6-4 and Louis going down 2-6 6-2 6-2 (doubles still to play)

The boys opened their account today with a 2-1 victory over Belgium (Samuel lost 6-2 6-2, William won 6-2 6-1 before Louis/William took the doubles 6-4 6-2. With Croatia winning 3-0 the only way we can win the group is by beating Romania 3-0 tomorrow and hoping Belgium beat Croatia 2-1

It was tighter than I anticipated against Romania (who had lost both their previous matches 3-0) but we managed a 2-1 win with William winning 6-2 6-1, Louis losing 7-5 6-1 and Louis/Samuel winning 6-2 4-6 [10-5]. Croatia beat Belgium 3-0 to win the group, so we play off for bronze against the Czech Republic tomorrow. Croatia play Russia for gold.

Bronze it is after a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic (Samuel won 7-5 6-0 against Matthew William Donald who presumably has British heritage, William lost 6-4 6-2 and Louis/Samuel won the doubles 6-2 6-2). Croatia won the trophy
