But it's only a question of where you draw the line.
i.e. if you want it to be a fight to the death, then get rid of tie-breaks in every set.
There's no 'set in stone' definition of what it should be.
I'm with Indy and Mark - get rid of endless fifth sets (as with endless other sets). Tie-break (or even a super tie-break/match tie-break - whatever they're called in English) at 12-12 sounds a great idea.
What happened in the final game of the Marray match? Seen some pics of Cuevas and Granollers arguing with the tournament referee. Must have been something serious?
The Beeb has helpfully just shed a bit more light on the incident:
More doubles drama [it comes immediately after a post about the unfinished business on Court 17]
It was all about the code violations and sit-down protests in the doubles match between Pablo Cuevas and Marcel Granollers, and Britain's Jonny Marray and Adil Shamasdin.
Cuevas was handed a code violation for unsportsmanlike behaviour when he threatened to urinate into a ball can after being told he could not leave the court to visit the bathroom in the fifth set.
He then angrily smashed a ball out of the court following a double fault and the 15th seeds were docked a point, resulting in Cuevas and his partner sitting down and refusing to play the final game.
The tetchy pair ended up losing their third-round match 6-3 4-6 6-4 3-6 14-12.
And another epic five-setter, this one lasting a shade over five hours, finally goes our way:
L16: (3) Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares (BRA) CR 10 (1+9) defeated (16) Mate Pavic & Michael Venus (CRO)/NZL) CR 73 (34+39) by 6-3 7-6(3) 4-6 4-6 16-14
OK, I was wrong. I admit that I was worrying unnecessarily yesterday evening & absolutely delighted that I was. I'm just no used to Brits not snatching defeated from the jaws of victory...
The wily old (combined age 66, though I suppose that's still relatively sprightly for a top doubles pairing! ) Frogs have just taken out the eighth seeds (& 2014 champions), Pospisil & Sock, by 6-4 3-6 6-7(3) 7-5 6-4, so I expect them to be a handful. For the record, the top seeds, Mahut & PHH, are still alive & kicking. Would be nice to think that Jamie's old partner, John Peers, & Henri Kontinen could deal with that threat in their QF.
Lots of former and current GS champions around in these QFs, no? Former Wimbledon champion and partner v multi-Slam champion and partner; former French Open champions against current AO champions; and then the Bryans in the 2nd seed slot and Mahut/PHH in 1st. Potentially good matches all around. But we'll have to disagree on the 1st (non-GB) QF, SC.

Indeed - & lots of top ten casualties littering the road to the QFs (I refer in particular to the defeat of Dodig & Melo (5) by Klaasen & Ram (11) God alone knows what that'll do to the rankings! I can't be @rsed to try & work it out), with the Bryans taking on the eleventh seeds. I had a feeling you'd say what you have about Mahut & PHH. I have a lot of time for Nicolas. I said what I did only because I thought Peers & Kontinen would be less of a handful for Jonny & Adil, should they manage to see off Huey & Mirnyi.
Haha; after a very long day's work yesterday a very short day's work today. Well done guys :D
apparently Cuevas had already been to the bathroom twice during the match and that's why the umpire refused. Cuevas was trying to say he needed another break because of the long 5th set. maybe some rule about loo breaks.
edit: oops sorry this was meant to be referring to your other post.

I've given up trying to work out who will wind up where on rankings - will leave that to those who are better at all this than I. Only thing that's clear is that Rojer and Tecau will take a major hit. Mahut and PHH have exceeded their 3rd round; Murray and Peers have quite a lot to defend yet. Soares has defended his QF points. Klaasen and Ram look as if they're on the way up generally - quietly have been having a good year. Big winners are Kontinen and Shamasdin (1st round out last year), and Benneteau, ERV and Ram (not even playing last year).
And I'd worked out why you felt that way - but I'll still hold out for a Marray/Shamasdin v Mahut/PHH semifinal, with Marray to win. (Not just a GB thing ... there is no player I can think of that I would hope to see win against Jonny Marray)

I manually agree all the top 30 rankings and points at the QF stage, having already tabulated them - I haven't been out much! I also agree Jonny Marray's live current points of 1051 which have him up from WR 89 to shown as live 73 except for ...
... the site has given 10 points to all the R1 losers ( Tecau, Rojer, M Lopez, Peya and Kubot ) rather than the correct zero counter for men's doubles, minor in the grand schene of things but poor ( assuming there's not been some unpublicised change since the French Open! )
So it is a useful current* source for considering ranking implications. The clearest one re Jamie is that to stay WR 1 he needs to win the title ( which I reckon would make him quite happy in itself ) without Mahut reaching the final.
* Slam time is probably the easiest update to do. This site has history with singles of having various issues at other times re such as qualifying points and defences.
