Marcus Willis is also the lead on the ATP roundup of qualifying - including a picture: www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/wimbledon-day-five-qualifying-wrap. And has encouragement from both Murrays on social media. Really delighted for him and all who support him!
out of 16 qualifiers, only 10 were seeded (and seeding goes to the top 32)
only 1 of the top 8 seeds qualified
After Marcus (which is just mega), very pleased to see qualify:
Matt Barton - lovely play, great to watch
Tristan Lamasine - French laid back youngster who'd only even won one set on grass before this week and looked REALLY distrustful of the green stuff against Zemlja and yet somehow won
Luke Saville - the amount of court time that guy clocks up is unreal - five sets yesterday, 8-6 in the third the day before (but like watching the guy play, it's gutsy)
Bemelmans - another one who hogs the court - tournament director nightmare: 11-9 in the third, five sets yesterday......
Copil - our Surbiton qualifier and Brit-basher showing that his 'class on grass' is real
Eduoard R-V - old school French gent on grass
Frat - crowd pleaser -brilliant match v Harrison
Skugor - big guy, watched him take apart a canny Spaniard
Sisjling - just knows his way around a grass court, and serves bombs - cut above
Olivetti - overcoming major injury, complete immobilisation
Three french, two Americans, two Aussies
- and one Brit !
NB Seems we have a big thank you to say to 'Jennifer'
I wonder if an Evoesque climb from the 700s to the top 100 in the next year might be possible? Am probably dreaming a bit but it certainly seems like he's in a good place.
With Marcus giving a lot of credit to European League tennis for keeping him in funds (at least partially) and match sharpness (as said, he's had some excellent wins these past months in France), a little shout out to Downe House too which seems to employ a lot of our players as at least temporary/part-time coaches.
Josh Goodhall was, I think, the first but they've had Willis, Cox, Neil P and at least one other, I'm sure, working for them.

its been a while since I've been on here but had to come on and say what a fabulous tournament the Qualie's is to watch. For 4 days I watched so much tennis, lots and lots of Brits (who all did so well) plus other international tennis players who you just know are going to be people to watch in the future.
saw Harriot and Marcus twice including the final round. Congratulations to Marcus and much deserved. he played so well, very calm and focused (not a lot of mutterings). he appeared a little tired at first which is probably understandable after all the matches he has had recently but towards the end of the first set he was settling in and finding his rhythm and touch. Second set onwards he was flowing. Another Russian who was a bit grumpy every time he lost a point but in the end no match for Marcus who understandably looked delighted to have won a place in the Main Draw at Wimbledon.
it was also so good to see other Brits, some not even in the qualies supporting all the British players.
there were lots of friendly people there and I even managed to say hello and have a chat with a few from this forum which was really nice.
so if any of you haven't been yet (this is the first time I've been to the qualies), it is so worth it. you would have an amazing time there :)
Late to this but ... despite having been awake all night (and thoroughly depressed by what I was watching), I was convinced Marcus was going to be the first GB qualifier for 8 years, so I just had to drag myself over to Roehampton - both re. the 8 year thing and because it was Marcus. In the end, I could have slept a bit - arriving at Barnes station at 12.30 expecting to have missed the 1st set, I found play had been put back until 2. Still, that gave me time to have lunch and talk to Ben from the New York Times, so it wasn't all bad!
Marcus wasn't on one of the main courts so the gangways were jammed, though it was only two courts away from the main grassy bank, so a lot of people watched it from there. I went up to the 'hill' around the back of the court and watched from there, where initially there were only 2 or 3 of us but eventually more than a dozen.
Marcus was chuntering to himself after most points (including muttering about Neil Pauffley after a dodgy net cord, for some reason), though I wasn't able to hear that much because I was in the trees and it was very windy, as you'll hear on the videos I'm about to link to. Apparently, he usually mutters far more, which must mean he's usually even more fun.
Medvedev played well in the first set and Marcus wasn't at his best but I don't remember my confidence that he'd win being overly shaken by the the 1st set slipping away and once he woke up and got on top in the 2nd set, I couldn't really see him losing. I missed almost all of the 3rd set (which by the looks of it might have been his strongest) because I'd ducked out to see the resumption of the Corrie/Salisbury doubles QR1 match (they finished it off 14-12 in the 3rd very efficiently but that took 20 minutes or so to get going because Hlavackova was still lying on the court getting treatment after retiring against Paszek)
For those not on Twitter, here are some pics/videos I took at the match:
Some typical Willis slice and dice in the 3rd game of the 4th set (he lost this break point - the last shot goes out - but won the next one to go *2-1 up): twitter.com/GBtennis/status/746365313961320448
Lovely to meet Emma on Friday too - I'm becoming ever more thankful to Katy for taking and posting that pic because coaches and fans keep identifying me from it and coming up and talking to me - I usually have some good conversations at tennis events with people I've pre-arranged to meet but more than ever since that photo!
