Yep best of 5, something that I'll never forget because of following live scores during a Mahut vs Bogdanovic match that went something like 20-18. The same year Mahut had that epic with Isner.

What a dull, damp and disappointing day. Firstly, just to clear up the mixed messages re OoP during the day, there were several revisions. By the time I got there at 11.30 (traffic was terrible), most of the courts had already been cancelled for the day. It was still drizzling at the time and the N/b 12 noon was more wishful thinking than anything else. This soon got changed to 1pm on courts 11 & 12 as they are higher up and therefore drier, with n/b 2pm on a couple of other courts.
At 12.50, the players were actually called to courts 11 & 12, only for it to start raining again almost immediately. They then decided to cancel all the women's matches and to try at least to get through the men's matches. Play finally began at 2pm.
I watched the entire two sets of Ed who in fairness, didn't do a lot wrong. He didn't find the rhythym that he had yesterday, but that was down exclusively to the Olivetti serve. It was huge and he used it well. He also volleyed superbly when Ed did get the returns back and Ed had little or no chance of breaking. Ed played solidly on his own serve and when he did get Olivetti into a rally, the Frenchman had no intention of being patient. He went for broke very early in the rally and made errors from the back of the court. This mostly enabled Ed to hold comfortably on his serve. Unfortunately the Frenchman's tactics paid off as his hit or miss approach from the back of the court always seemed to work in the breakers.
I was talking to Nick Weal during much of the 2nd set and he described the Olivetti serve as Isneresque. I counted at least 3 or 4 huge aces on 2nd serve in just the 1st set.
Ed just has to keep battling away and hope that he gets chances tomorrow. He is still playing well.
As for my reporting duties, no major scoops today. Sorry. The nearest I came was talking to Scott Clayton at the start of the 3rd set. I was about to ask him why he had chosen Turkey over the QWC play-offs when the heavens opened and we all ran for shelter. I was curious about this because if he had chosen the QWC play-offs, Marcus would have missed out all together. I think Marcus owes Scott a drink or three from his winnings so far.
I will leave quote of the day, however, to HRH Leon Smith OBE. I spoke to him briefly again before the rain and congratulated him on his OBE. He responded with his usual self deprecating humour by telling me that in his case, OBE stood for Other Bloke's Efforts. You cannot help but like that guy.
Sadly, I can't get there tomorrow. It is my one day of work during this trip. So like most others, I will be following on livescores - unless it rains all day and I can get there on Saturday

Leon seems so lovely - very modest. British tennis owes him a lot. (And, yes, he is tennis royalty!)
